J. S. MAOKIE. FOLDING GOT OR BED.
No. 537,839. Patented Apr. 23, 1895.
NlTE STATES.
ATENT- FmEf JAMES sMAoKIn, on BARRE, VERMONT.
FOLDING coToR BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,8 39, dated April 23, 1895.
Application filed November 1, 1893. Renewed October 11, 1894. Serial No, 525,689. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES S. MACKIE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Barre, in the county of Washington and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Cots or Beds;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inventron, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a folding cot or bed, and has for its object to provide simple and convenient means for readily and easily folding all the parts of such a device including the wire or spring bed bottom and the mattress by a simultaneous operation.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a bed or cot embodying the invention shown broken away and having the mattress removed. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a cot or bed shown folded.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the opposite side rails of the cot or bed and 2 the opposite end rails connected to said side rails, and which are supplied with legs or feet 3. The inner opposing sides of the rails 1 are supplied with longitudinally disposed strips 4, which have therein, adjacent to their opposite ends, notches 5. Adjacent to the opposite ends of the said strips 4,,and slightly above the same and nearer the ends of the side rails, are metallic loops or straps 6.
Hinged to the upper portions of the end rails 2, which are slightly below the upper edges of the side rails 1, are the head and foot boards 7 and 8, each of which has bars 9 hinged to the opposite inner portions of the same, said bars having lower angularly shaped ends 10 to engage thenotches in the strips 4, and being of a width to slide on the top portions of the said strips 4 when the said angularly shaped ends are disengaged from the notches 5 in folding the head and foot board-s inwardly, as
clearly shown in Fig. 2. Also pivotally secured to the head and foot boards in slots 11 directly under the points where the bars 9 are attached, are links 12, whose lower ends move through the straps or loops 6, and are pivotally attached to the outer ends of elbows or brackets 13, secured to the opposite sides of the spring bed bottom frame let, which also supports the mattress as shown in Fig. 2.
When the head and end boards are folded inwardly, the links 12 are pushed downwardly to proportionately and simultaneously move the frame 14 downward and permit the said head and end boards to fold snugly inward on top of the mattress, as fully shown in Fig. 2. The straps or loops 6 hold the links 12 in place and the construction is duplicated in connection with both the head and foot board.
The device as herein set forth is exceptionally convenient and facilitates the storage of the cot or bed in a small space and to insure a stability of support when the head and foot board are raised and an automatic looking action of the bars 9 with the notches in the strips 4.
It is obviously apparent that many minor changes in the construction and arrangement of the several parts might be made and substituted for those shown and described without in the least departing from the spirit or nature of the invention. 1
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In a cot or bed, the combination of side rails having strips on the inner opposing sides,
notches and-a bed bottom frame adapted to supporta mattress connected to the said head and foot boards and adapted to move therewith, substantially as described.
2. In a cot or bed,the combination of a bed framehaving head and end boards hinged thereto to fold inwardly thereover, side rails and strips having notches therein, near the opposite ends of the same, bars hinged to the said head and foot boards and adapted to engage the said notches a bed bottom frame adapted to support a mattress movably mounted within the bed frame and having elspecification in the presence of two subscribbows or brackets secured to the opposite sides ing witnesses. thereof, and links secured to the outer p01- a tions of said elbows or brackets and to the JAMED MAQKIE' 5 head and foot boards, substantially as de- Witnesses:
scribed. R. W. BRALEY,
In testimony whereof I have signed this F. N. BRALEY.
