D. COLOGNE. l
SHIRT-WAIST.
Patented Apr. 16, 1895. 1 i
Nrrn'n *,Sfrrirns PATENT Prion.
DONALDSON COLOGNE, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO SETH H. NICHOLS, OF SAME PLACE.
SHIRT-WAIST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,676, dated .April 16, 1895..
Applica/tien filed March 2, 1895. Serial No. 540,362. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may con/cern,.-
Be it known that I, DONALDSON COLOGNE, of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirt-Waists; and I do hereby declare the following' tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in shirt waists and more particularly to means for removably attaching buttons thereto for the reception and support of trousers, skirts, dac.
A further object is to attach buttons to a shirt waist in such manner that the trousers or other garment shall be permitted to have a slight lateral play at the points of attachment thereof to the shirt waist.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a shirt waist having my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of one of the tabs. Fig. 3 is a sectional View.
A represents a shirt waist of ordinary construction and has stitched thereto at a proper distance from its lower edge, a band or belt B, about which a series of tabs C are disposed at suitable intervals, the tabs corresponding in number with that of the buttons to be employed for attaching a pair of trousers or other garment to the shirt waist, each tab being made with a hole a for the passage of `a button h. Each tab is made in a single piece other garment is attached to the tabs C by 5o means of the buttons b, the tabs will be permitted to have a slight lateral and swinging movement commensurate to more or less eX- tent with the strain .brought to bear upon them and result to enhance the comfort of the wearer.
When the shirt waist is to be washed the buttons h can be readily removed.
The button c by which the meeting ends of the belt B are connected together being lo- 6o cated at an equal distance from the respective edges of the belt, it is a matter of importance that the bottoms of the button holes in the tabs C shall -bear about the same relation to the edges ofthe belt, so that the buttons connecting the trousers or other garment to the belt shall be exactly. in line with the button c permanently secured to one end of said belt. By securing the tabs to the belt and shirt waist in the manner above explained, 7o this result can be readily and accurately accomplished, as more or less of the upper edge of a tab can be inserted between the belt and shirtwaist. Should one tab happen to be made longer or shorter than the' lothers or 7 5 should the button hole in the tab be made too high or too low or too long or too short, more or less of the upper edge of the tab will be inserted between the belt and .shirt waist to cause the lower end of the button hole to 8o terminate near the center of the belt and in line with the bottoms of all the other button holes.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i l. As a new article of manufact-ure, a waist having a belt secured thereto and button holed tabs free from the belt at their lower ends, the upper ends of the tabs being inserted be- 9o tween the upper edge ofthe belt and the waist and secured by stitching through the belt, tabs and waist, the button holes in the tabs being within the confines of the upper and lower edges of the belt whereby the rear faces of thebuttons bear against the belt, substantially as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a waist a belt secured thereto and button holed tabs specification in the presence of two subsorib secured at their upper ends to the upper edge ing Witnesses. of the belt and free from the belt at their lower ends, the button holesin the tabs being DONALDSON COLOGNE' 5 within the connes of the upper and lower Witnesses:
edges of the belt, substantially as set forth. C. S. DRURY,
In testimony whereof I have signed this S. G.ANOTTINGHAM.
