UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES R. DE BEVOISE, OF FLUSHING, NEW YORK.
UNDERWAIST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Lettere Patent No. 521,403, dated June 12, 1894.
Application filed December 21, 1893. Serial No. 494,313. (N o model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known thatI, CHARLES R. DE BE- VOIsE,a citizen of the United States, residing at Flushing, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented new and usefulImproVementsin Underwaists, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention has for its object to provide a new and improved underwaist particularly designed for comfortably supporting drawers, stockings, and the like, and which is strong, durable, and economical in construction.
To accomplish this object the invention consists in the features of construction and the combination or arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which-h Figure l is a rear elevation of the improved waist. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line w, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation showing a modification. Figfel is a sectional view taken on the line 2 2, Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the waist.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe 'the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein- TheletterAindicates the body of the waist, which is provided with shoulder straps or bands B, extending over the shoulders and down the rear of the waist body, as in Fig. 1, and also down the front of the waist body, as in Fig. 5. The lower extremities of the shoulder straps at the front and rear are joined to a waist-band E, which is sewed, stitched, or otherwise secured to the waist body. The shoulder-straps or bands B extend in curved lines along the front and rear of the waist body and they diverge downwardly, as will be clearly understood by reference to the drawings. to the shoulder straps in juxtaposition to the shoulders of the waist body, and portions of this strap converge downwardly between the shoulder straps. The supporting strap` is stitchedor sewed to the waist body at points between the shoulder straps, and is also stitched to the Waist body beneath the shoulder straps. The supporting strap C may be formed of a single piece of material folded and arranged in the shape or form illustrated A supporting strapC is connected v in Fig. l, or the supporting strap may be composed of two separate pieces arranged as shown in Fig. 3.
In the construction illustrated by Fig. 1 the two portions of the supporting strap extend in curved lines; while in the construction ex,
hibited by Fig. 3 they extend in straight lines, and, as before explained, these portions converge downwardly and meet at a point centrally between the shoulder straps.
' The shoulder straps B are provided with buttons B', Fig. 1, and from the central portion of the supporting strapC is suspendeda ybutton C. The buttons B are each designed to support a tab D, and the button C is designed to supportatab D The tabs are provided at their upper ends with button-holes to engage thebuttons, and at their lowerends with attached buttons G and G', for the purpose of comfortably and properly supporting such articles as pants, drawers, skirts, and the ike.
The tabs are lengthwise elastic, so that they will readily yield during the movements of the body, whereby a very desirable and efficient underwaist is provided which can be utilized for supporting the garments ot' the wearer.
By connecting the shoulder-straps B to the supporting strap C, and securing these straps to the waist body near the shoulders thereof, a very strong and durable article is obtained.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. An underwaist having a waist-band E, shoulder-straps B extending over the shoulders and along the front and rear of the waist body to the Waist-band, a supporting-strap C secured at the upper ends to the shoulderstraps and to the waist body, and converging along the rear of the waist body toward the waist-band, the tabs D engaging the shoulder straps, and the tab D' engaging the lower converging portion of the supporting-strap, substantially as described.
2. An underwaist having a waist-band E, shoulder-straps B -extending over the shoulders and curved along the front and rear to the waist-band, and provided with buttons B', the supporting-strap C secured at the upper ends to the shoulder-straps and to the waist body, converging along the rear of the waist IOO body toward the Waist-band and provided my hand in the presence ofvtwo subscribing with a button C', lengthwise elastic tabs D Witnesses. engaging the buttons of the shoulder straps,
and the lengthwise elastic tab D engaging CHAb R' DE BEVOISE' 5 the button of the supporting-strap, substan- Witnesses:
tially as described. WM. C. IIAUFF,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set E. F. KASTENHUBER.
