Description

(No Model.) I
D. SHIRLEY.
HAND PAD; No. 536,548. Patented Mar. 26, 1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL SHIRLEY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
HAN D-PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,548, dated March 26, 1895.
' Application filed May 23,1894. Serial No. 512,218- (No model.)
. specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hand pads and it consists in the construction thereof which will be fully set forth hereinafter and especially referred to in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a hand pad with overlapping pieces of suitable material for the palm, whereby several thicknesses are provided'for wear and protection to the user, and to provide the back portion of the hand pad with a transversely slit loop for the reception of the middle fingers, whereby binding of the fingers is prevented when anything is clasped.
In the accompanying drawings:-Figure 1 is a plan view of the palm of the hand pad. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view of the hand pad. Fig.- 3 is a plan view of the back of the hand pad. Fig. Lisa view showing one of the overlapping pieces for the palm formed of a doubled piece of fabric.
A indicates the palm of the hand pad formed of a piece of leather or other suitable material, and B turned back portions connected preferably by means of an'elastic web B, riveted or sewed thereto.
D is an opening in which the thumb E is attached in a suitable manner.
My invention has relation to a series of pieces or strips a, attached to the palm transversely, and one made to overlap the other as shown, so that several thicknesses is formed for the protection of the palm, while at the same time the flexibility of the hand pad is retained the same as though no strips were used. One strip overlaps the other and proteots the sewing or other means which attaches it to the palm.
Instead of using leather strips, fabric strips may be used as shown in Fig. 4, in which case the fabric will be doubled as shown at b, which construction I prefer to the use of leather as being cheaper, and almost as effective.
At the back of the hand pad is a loop 0, for the middle fingers of the hand of the wearer, and this loop is provided with one or more transverse slits d, which avoids cramping of the fingers by the said loop when grasping an object, and leaves the hand pad together with the transverse strips for the palm perfectly flexible, a feature very desirable in a glove of this character.
From the above description it will be seen that I have produced a hand pad for working purposes which is very durable, and yet very flexible, allowing the user to readily grasp an object, thus avoiding the thick clumsy working hand pad heretofore used where they have been reinforced as will be readily understood, owing to the fact that only one edge of the strips is secured to the hand pad, in my con-- struction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is=- 1. An improved hand pad having a series of flexible wearing strips secured to and extending transversely the palm thereof from side to side and one overlapping the other, substantially as described.
2. An improved hand pad having a series of flexible wearing strips secured at their in nor edges only to the palm thereof and ex'- tending transverse the palm from side to side, the free edge of one strip overlapping the attached edge of the adjacent strip, substantially as shown.
3. An improved hand pad having a series of flexible wearing strips secured at their inner edges only to the palm thereof and extending transverse the palm from side to side, their free edges being doubled, and the free edge of one strip overlapping the attached edge of the adjacent strip, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL SHIRLEY.
