March 26, 1929.l G -TRAVERS BOXERS HAND PROTECTOR Filed Oct. 5, 1927 :in my improved construction.
Patented Mar. 26, 1929.l
, UNITED STATES GORDON TRAVERS, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
BOXER S HAND PROTECTOR.
Application filed October 5,'1927. Serial No. 224,032.
My inventionrelates to a hand and Wrist portector for boxers and has for its principal object the provision of a padded and reinforced glove-like memberthat is'adapted to be worn by boxers particularly while training,
and which glove or protecting device is especially designed for the portection of the hands and wrists.
During training periods and particularly while punching an inflated or padded bag there is danger of injury to the hands, knuckles and wrists of the boxer, and it is the purpose of my invention to provide padded glove-like members that cover the hand,
l5 thumb and wrist of the wearer, and which padded members are reinforced so as to offer a relatively high degree of protection to the various jointsof the hand, and wrist, thereoy minimizing danger of injury to the hands of Ythe wearer during training periods.
A further object ofvmy invention is to provide a hand protecting device of the character referred to that will enable the hand of the wearer to be readily closed or clinched and likewise enable the end of the thumb to be readily turned inward when the hand is closed. lWith the foregoing and` other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of- 3o parts that will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which a n l 1 is aview looking against the'inside or palm portion of a hand protecting device ol F ig. 2 is a view lookfng against the rear or back side of the hand protector. j
Fig'.- 3 is an enlarged cross section taken oni the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
-..J Fig. 4 is an enlarged section taken on line Fig. 5 is a cross section taken onthe line 5-5 of Fig. 1. f.
Fig. 6 is a cross section taken on the line member that is placed in that portion of the protecting device that overlies .the back of the wrist. y Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a reinforcing member that is positioned in the protecting member over the base portion of the thumb and the joint between the thumb and wrist.
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of one ofthe re inforcing members that is utilized in the hand protecting device.
The main body portion of my improvedv hand protectorv includes an inner or palm member 10 and an outer or back member 11, which members are preferably formed of flexible leather; and formed integral with lsaid inner and outer members are rearward extensions 12 that are adapted to overlie the back and the side portions of the wrist of the wearer.
The forward end of the members 10 and 11 are extended a short distance to'form inner and outer sections 10a and 11EL respectively that are adapted to overlie the knucklesbetween the palm portion of the hand and the fingers and likewise to overlie the joints of the fingers immediately adjacent to the knuckles and arranged between these forwardly extending portions 1()a .and 11a is suitable padding 13` preferably curled hair' or fibrous material.
Arranged on the inner forward extension 10a is a transversely disposed strap, preferably vof leather, that is secured by rows of stitching 11i to the member 10a, thereby providing a series of finger receiving-loops 15, and which construction leaves the outer portions of the fingers free and uncovered. V
r1`lie ends of a transversely disposed strap 16 preferably ofleather are secured to the side edges of the member 10 immediatelyV to `the rear ofthe linger receiving loops 15, which strap is designed to lie across the palm of the handof the wearer and arranged on the face of this strap 16 is a transverselyarranged substantially cylindrical padded member 17 that constitutes a filler-or gripping member when the hand is closed andclinched. V
Arranged between the wrist covering portions 12 of the protector is a. substantially rec Vtangular section 18 of reinforcing material such as light weight sole leather, the saine being flexible to a certaindegree and yet having sufficient stiffness to afford a considerable de-V f grec of protection to the back of the wrist of the wearer, and arranged between this reinforcing member 18 and the inner one of the members `12 is a layer 19 of padding such as curled hair of fibrous material. In order. that the wrist covering portion of the protector may flex readily around the back of the wrist, l prefer to extend a row of stitching 20 lengthwise of the wrist covering portion along a medial line.
In order tov further reinforce the wristy covering portion of the protector I arrange between the reinforcing member 18 and the outer back sect1on'12 a series of transversely fil disposed reinforcing ribs 21, which may be composed of sole leather, composition, or flexible reeds, and these transversely disposed reinforcing members .are retained in transversely disposed" pockets that are formed by transversely 4disposed rows of `stitching 22 that intersect the medial row 20, and which meet the rows of stitching that imite the side edges of the wrist covering sections l2.
Thus when the protector is Vpositioned Aon the hand the entire back and side portions of the wrist of the wearer are protected by the member 18 and the transversely disposed reinforcing ribs 21.
Formed integral with or secured to one side of the wrist covering portion of the protector is an elongated member composed of inner and outer sections 24 of flexible material such as leather, which member is designed to cover the base portion of the thumb and that portion of the wrist immediately below the thumb and the forward portions of these members 24 are brought together to form a thumb covering member 25.
The inner section 2S of the thumb covering member consists in a single layer or section of flexible material and the outer end portion of the thumb covering member is provided with a relatively thin layer 27 of ysuitable padding, which enables the end joint of the thumb of the wearer to be readily turned inward when the hand is closed.
` Arranged within that portion of Vthe thumb covering member that overlies the base of the thumb and the adjacent portion of the wrist is an elongated section 29 of reinforcing material such as light weight sole leather or the like and arranged between this section of reinforcing material and the inner layer of the thumb covering member` is a relatively thin layer 30 of suitable padding preferably 'curled hair or fibrous material.
Arranged between the reinforcing mem ber 29 and the outer flexible wall of the thumb covering member is a series of short transversely disposed reinforcing members 3l that are practically duplicates of the reinforcing ribs 21.
Thus the entire thumb below the first joint and that portion ofthe wrist below the thumb is covered and protected by the parts 29, 30 and 31, and such protection minimizes the danger of throwing the thumb out of joint Vduring bag punching operations.
degree of protection to the wrist joint andv to the joint between the thumb and hand.'
lt will be understood that during training and particularly while punching the bag the wrist and thumb joints are the ones that are most liable to be yinjured orthrown out of joint and to minimize this danger, l have provided a protecting device havi-nO its wrist and thumb covering portions providedwith padded surfaces that lie immediately against -the surfaces of the wrist and the thumb and with reinforcing members disposed directly over said padded portions, and which arrangement is very effective in performing the functions for which itis intended.
It will be readily understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved hand and wrist protector for boxers may be made and substituted for those herein shown'. and described without departing from the spirit of my invention7 the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
