GLOVE ORMITTEN.
No. 486,024. Patented Nov. 8, 1892 1145- Nonms Perms co, PnoTo-uruo" vusmusron, u. c
i UNITED STAT S PATENT --'On FERDINAND BERTHEAU AND ANDERS e. HOEGREN, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GLOVE OR MITTEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 486,024, dated November 8, 1892. Application filed July 14, 1892. Serial No. 440,014. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FERDINAND BERTHEAU and ANDERS G. HOEGREN, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illi- 1101s, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves or Mittens; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in mittens or gloves for husking corn or other similar purposes, the present invention be mg designed as an improvement upon our prior patent, dated September 9, 1890, No. 436,206; and it consists in uniting the parts which make up the glove or mit by staples at such parts as are liable to receive wear, and reinforcing the same between the thumb and hand portion by a strip, which is secured thereto by parallel rows of staples, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, Figure 1 is a plan View of a mit constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 is a view of a glove provided with our improvements.
A designates the body portion of the mit or glove, which is properly shaped and is made up of two or more pieces of leather,
" and is provided on such parts as form the palm, fingers, and thumb at their grasping portions with metallic staples, which are passed through the leather which makes up the glove or mit and through the fibrous material, having a nap or piled surface, which partially covers the ends of the staples and prevents them coming in contact with the hands of the wearer. This lining a also serves to reinforce the glove and give a better bearing-surface to the staples, and it may be cotton, flannel, velvet, or plush.
When the hand-covering is made in the form of a mitten, the edges are connected to each other by staples l), which are of less width and length than the staples secured to the grasping portion, and the parts of the glove or mit which are not liable to receive an undue amount of wear may be stitched in the usual manner. Around the base of the thumb we secure a reinforcing-strip B, which is attached by parallel rows of staples c, and beneath this reinforcing-strip the parts of the glove may be primarily connected together by a line of stitching. In practice we have ascertained that this portion of the glove receives an undue amount of wear, which is prevented by the reinforcing-strip herein shown. We prefer to use the same kind of staples and arrange them in substantially the same manner shown in our prior patent referred to.
The mit or glove hereinbefore described is useful for husking or shelling corn, though it is obvious it may be used for many other purposes where it is desired to give a firm and secure grasp to an object.
When the covering is made in the form of a glove, the base of the slits forming the fingers each have reinforcing-staples (Z.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A glove or mit provided on its grasping portions with metallic staples, which are passed through the leather and through a lining, the ends being bent upon said lining, so as to be embedded therein, and a reinforcing-strip secured adjacent to the junct- .ure of the thumb with the main portion of the glove or mit by staples, for the purpose set forth.
2. A glove or mit for the purpose set forth, having its palm and thumb or grasping portions provided with metallic staples, the
2 sea-02s ends thereof being passed through-the leather staples c, substantially as shown, and for the forming the glove or mit and through a linpurpose set forth. ing a, having a piled surface, said staples be In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures ing upset, so as to enter said piled surface, in presence of two witnesses,
5 and arranged in rows, which alternate with FERDINAND BERTHEAU each other, so as not to materially impair the ANDERS G HOEGREN flexibility of the mit 01' glove, the pieces of leather forming the glove 0r lnit being eon- Witnesses: neeted by staples b, and a reinforcing-strip ADOLF V IULIN,
10 B, united to the body and. thumb by rows of PER ALBERT JULIN.
