W. SCHWARTZ.
I KNOOKDOWN FURNITURE.
Patented Mar. 5, 1895 UNIT STATES PATENT rrrcn.
I WILLIAM SCHWARTZ, OF PLYMOUTH, YVISOONSIN.
KNOCKDOWN FURNITURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,081, dated March 5, 1895.
Application filed November 12, 1894.- Serial No. 528 522- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SCHWARTZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Plymouth, in the county of Sheboygan and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Furniture; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. 1
My invention has for its object to effectually brace knock-down furniture of various kinds when set up for use; and said invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 represents a sectional view taken on line 1-1 of the succeeding figure and illustrates mvimproved brace in connection with a portion of a piece of knock-down furniture; Fig. 2, a horizontal section on line 2-2 of the preceding figure, and Fig. 3, a section on line 3-3 of the second figure.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A, B, represent the sides and O a front or back of a cabinet or other article of knock-down furniture.
The part A is provided with a recess b through which extends a transverse pin D engaged by an eye or hook c at one end of a brace-rod E, the other end of this brace-rod being an eye d loosely engaged by an end of a lever F, the latter in its preferred form being a staple having the ends thereof curved and flattened upon their sides.
The part B above specified is provided with a recess 6 through which a transverse pin G is extended, and this pin constitutes a fulcrum for the lever that is connected to the aforesaid brace-rod. The recess 6 has a camface f against which the lever F is operated to exert draw on the rod E as the latter is forced down onto the pin G above specified, the result of this operation being to take up all slack and effectually brace the parts A, B, of the furniture.
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of parallel members in a knock-down piece of furniture one of which has a recess provided with a cam-face, a pin extending transverse of the recess, a brace rod in pivotal connection with the other member of the furniture, and a lever joined to the brace-rod for engagement with said recess intermediate of the cam-face and pin.
2. The combination of parallel members in a knock-down piece of furniture one of which has a recess provided with a cam-face, a pin extending transverse of the recess, a bracerod having one end thereof in pivotal. connection with the other member of the furniture,
and a lever in theform of astaple connected to the other end ofsaid rod and having curved and flattened ends, said lever operating in the aforesaid recess intermediate of the camface and pin.
3. The combination with parallel members in a knock-down piece of furniture both of which have recesses crossed by pins, one of the recesses being provided with a cam-face; a brace-rod, in pivotal connection with one of the pins, and a lever joined to the bracerod for engagement with the cam-faced recess against the pin therein.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in
the county of Milwaukee and State of Wiscousin, in the presence of two witnesses.
WM. SCHWARTZ.
