Description
L. A. WINN. Carpet-Stretcher.
No. 215,424. Paten ted May 13, I879.

UNITED STATE PATENT OFFICE.
LOWELL A. VVINN, OF GARTHAGE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-STRETCHER S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent'No. 215,424, dated May 13, 1879; application filed December 14, 1878.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOW'ELL ADELBERT WINN, of Carthage, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Carpet-Stretcher, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the stretcher. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention consists of a carpet-stretcher actuated by a spring and lever.
An elastic piece of steel or iron, or other material that will answer for the purpose, has one end turned at a right angle, forming the too A of the instrument. The other end is flared at the sides, and has teeth out in it to form the heel B, (or the heel can be made separately and afterward attached.) The piece of steel or other material is then bent, as shown at 0, so that the two ends-the heel and toe ends-shall be of nearly or quite the same length.
Passing through thestaple D on the lever E is a link, F, which engages in hook G on the toe-leg of the instrument. The lever E rests on and has for its fulcrum the offset H, which is attached to the heel-leg.
In hook G is a hole at I, through which the pin K'is passed, and by which it is retained in an upright position, while at L is shown an auxiliary projection from the toeleg, to which it may be attached at a right angle, or nearly so, which has a hole in its center, through which also the pin K passes, and from which it receives some direction and support.
The instrument is operated by inserting the toe A between the mop or base board and the floor, holding itin position by driving the pin K into the floor. The heel or toothed end B is then caught into the carpet, and by pressure exerted on end of lever E in the direction of the arrow the heel end is pushed toward the toe end, stretching the carpet as it moves.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patenr.
l. The carpet-stretcher, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the spring, lever, and link, substantially as and for the purpose described.
Witnesses H. J. WELoH, A. H. FRANCIS.
