WITNESSES: W 4 Ww/" NJFEYERS, PNOTO-LITHDGRAPHER. WASHINGTON DC- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. MILLER, OF HUNTSVILLE, ILLINOIS.
CARPET-STRETCH ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,663, dated June 8, 1880.
Application filed May 3, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. MILLER, of Huntsville, in the county of Schuyler and State of Illinois, have invented a new and use ful Improvementin Oarpet-Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in certain novel details of construction and the arrangement with relation to each other of a stretching-bar, braces, lever, fulcrum-bar, pawl, and ratchet, as hereinafter particularly described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention in position for use. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the stretching-bar, provided with spurs a for engagement with the carpet.
Near the ends of this bar are obtuse-angled metallic plates B, to which are pivoted the inner ends of two diagonal braces, D D, which may be folded, as indicated in dotted lines, when not in use. When in use they extend diagonally rearward, and have their outer ends pivoted by a pin, (1, to the lower end of a lever, 0, which has its fulcrum in a forked bar, F. Both the lever and the fork of the bar are provided with series of holes,.through which passes a pin, G, to form the fulcrum, and this fulcrum may be changed, and the leverage regulated at the pleasure of the person using the stretcher by placing the pin in dilferent holes. 1
(Model) One edge of the lever G is provided'with ratchet-teeth h, for the engagement of the point of a pawl, J, pivoted by a pin, l, in the fork of the bar F. The position of this pawl may also be changed to correspond with the position of the lever.
The rear end of the bar F is provided with a hook, m, for engagement with a screw-eye, s, which is screwed into the floor at suitable points.
In using this stretcher, the bar F is hooked to the ring or eye 8, and the spurs a are caught into the carpet. The lever O is then moved in the direction indicated by the arrow, so that its lower end or short arm pushes the stretching-bar A in the opposite direction. The lever is held steadily in position by the pawl J, so as to keep the carpet stretched un til it is properly secured by tacks.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the stretching-bar A, braces D D, lever G, fulcrum-bar F, pawl J, and ratchet h, arranged with relation to each other and operating in the manner and for the purpose substantially as herein described.
JOHN MELVIL MILLER.
