UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL HEINTZ, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK.
CARPET-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 'No. 231,666, dated August 31, 1880.
Application filed July 23,1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMIL HEINTZ, of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Carpet-Stretching Device, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which simi lar letters refer to like parts, and of which- Figure l is a perspective view; Fig. 2, a side elevation Fig. 3, an end elevation of the U-piece D and. Fig. 4, an end elevation of the U-piece G, with its hinge F.
My invention relates to that class of carpetstretchers which are adjustable, and which may be made to adapt themselves to such lengths as will meet the requirements of various-sized rooms or apartments.
The object of the invention is to construct a carpet-stretcher which, while being of the adjustable type, will require but a single operator for stretching and nailing down of carpets, and which may be locked in its place after stretching of the carpet, and thus remain at the will of the operator.
These objects are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the drawings already described, and are accomplished by means of two bars, G and K, of any desired length, a pivoted U- piece or lock-clutch, D, a similar U-piece in a reversed position, G, and a foot provided with a gang of teeth pitching forward, as shown at O, the teeth being represented by the letters P P P, and adapted for biting into and grip ing the carpet fabric without a possibility of slipping or tearing the same.
A is a hinged heel for abutting against the base-boards of the room, and is connected with the bar 0 by means of a hinge, B. G is the primal or base-board bar, and is provided at any required distance from its foot end with the U-piece D, and at the opposite end with a hinge, F, placed in a position reversed to that of the'hinge B. D is a U-pieee pivoted to O at E, as required. E is the pivot upon which the clutch or U-piece D works. F is a hinge connecting the bar 0 with the U-piece G. G is the U-piece, which is connected with G by the hinge F, and acts as a guide to the bar K. K is a lengthening-bar, provided with a series of H. J is a removable pin,by means of which the lengthening-bar K may be secured at any desired length by passing the pin through the holes H and the limbs of the U-piece G. L is a strip screwed into the lengthening-bar K by means of screws R R, and .serves to carry the stretcher-foot 0. N is a pair of hangers secured to the piece L, and swinging freely thereon by means of the pivot M. These hangers are securely fastened to the stretcher-foot O. O is the stretcher-foot, provided underneath with a series or gang of griping-points, P, at regular intervals, and secured to O by means of the corresponding piece Q. I
Having thus set forth the various parts of my invention, I will endeavor to (lescribeits operation: I adjust my device to any desired length required for its most efficient work by means of the pin J, acting as described. I now bend over toward the hinged heel A the U-piece D, and thus release the end of the lengthening-bar K. I then place the heel A against the base-board of the room, and the stretcher-foot O in its proper position upon the carpet to be stretched. I now lift upward upon the stretcher, and the bars 0 and K, acting upon the hinge F, cause the stretcher-foot O to follow, together with its attachments. When I have thus attained a sufficient takeup I simply press down upon the bar K, which act causes the stretcher-foot to gripe into and carry or stretch the carpetin itsforward movement, which, when completed, I there secure by pressing the U-piece back over the end of the bar K. Thus it will be seen that I retain, by my device, the carpet in a stretched condition for ready and convenient nailing down.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, and what I claim, is-- The two U-pieces D and G, the two hinges B and F, and the pivoted piece N, in combination witlrthe bars 0 and K, pivoted as at E J, the bar K having adjusting-holes H, the whole constructed substantially as set forth, and for the purpose described.
EMIL HEINTZ.
