Be it known'that I, JAMES B. MARTINJJALE, of New Castle, in the county of Henry, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Machine for Stretching Carpets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, ranking a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspectiveview.

My invention relates to constructing or covering a roller, of suitable size, of I smooth or roughened India rubber, which is secured in a proper frame; the roller is applied 4to the surface of the carpet to be stretched,

and shovedforward. When sufficiently stretched, the frame is let fall on the door, and the tucks F F F F i &c., ig. 1, hold it in place. To give more or less-stretching power, there is a brake, B, hinged on the lower side to cross-piece C, or with pivots working in slots, in ears D D, which is tightened or loosened by means of the screw,H, on the end of the handle, G, pressing against the said brelre,` B, figs. 1 and 3. The roller is secured n'the frame by means of the pivots, J J, and ears, D D, iig. 1. In the under side'of the cross-bar, C, are small tacks, F F, Svc., or nails, sharpened, to hold the machine in place while nailing or tacking` down the carpet. The frame, including everything except the rubber covering, may be made of metal or Wood.

I claim as lny invention a. carpet stretcher made with a. roller covered with India rubber, with' or without a. roughened surface, the rolling and pressure of which roller are regulated a't pleasure by means of the brake B,
