IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR MOVING PIANOS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,966, dated January 23, 1872.

Specification describing a new and Improved Device for Moving Pianos, invented by SAM- UEL D. REYNOLDS, of Rochelle, in the county of Ogle and State of Illinois.

Figure 1 is a side View of my improved device, shown as attached to a piano. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved device, the use of which will enable pianos to be conveniently moved, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient inuse; and it consists in the device constructed as hereinafter more fully described.

A B are two bars, connected at their upper ends by a cross-bar, O, and near their lower ends by a cross-bar, D. The frame A B O D ismade of such a size as to readily receive a piano within it. The inner side of the bars A O D are padded, as shown in Fig. 2, so that should the polished surface of the piano strike against it said surface will not be marked or otherwise injured. To and between the lower ends of the bars A B are pivoted the rollers E, the faces of which should project below the lower ends of the bars A B, so that the piano can be rolled forward upon said rollers. F are two bars, which should be enough longer than the piano to enable their ends to be conveniently grasped at the ends of said piano. The bars F may be slid into slots in bars A B and secured in place by wedge Gr driven into said slots along the edges of the said bars F, as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2. If desired, the bars F may be secured to the bars A B by the catches or buttons H pivoted at their upper ends to the outer sides of the said bars A B, and having a notch formed in the side of their lower ends to hook upon bolts I secured to the bars A B, and having handnuts J screwed upon their outer ends to clamp the said catches or keepers H to the said bars F. By this construction by loosening the hand-nuts J the keepers H may be turned back, and the bars F removed without its being necessary to draw out the said bars longitudinally, so that the device niay be used in rooms too small to allow the said bars F to be withdrawn lengthwise.

In using the device the piano to be moved is turned upon its rear edge upon the benches or horses in the ordinary manner, and the legs and treadles are removed. The frames A B O D are then passed over the ends of the piano and secured by screws passing through the bars B and screwing into the bottom of the piano, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The bars F are then secured to the frame A B 0 D, and the piano can be easily and readily moved wherever desired.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the flames A B O D, padded upon the inner sides of the bars A O D, the rollers E, and the bars F, whether the said bars be secured by slots and keys or by the device H I J, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination of the pivoted keepers or buttons H, bolts I, and hand-nuts J, with the bars F, rollers E, and frames A B (J D, padded upon the inner sides of the bars A G D, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
