UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. EGLER, OF KNOXVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
CARPET-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,333, dated February 9, 1892.
Application filed March 13, 1891. serial No. 384,937. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHNJI. EGLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Alleghenyand State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a partof this specification.
My invention relates to an improved carpet-stretcher; and it consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of myimproved carpet-stretcher, which is constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the rear cross brace. Fig. 4 is an enlarged side elevation of the device for attaching the rear extensions together.
To put my invention into practice I provide a frame 1 of a suitable size and form of construction and mount therein in suitable bearings 2 a shaft 3, to which is secured a lever 5, provided with pawl (5. Operating beneath this frame 1 is a rack-bar 7 capable of being moved in the direction of the length of the said frame, and to which is affixed the top portion of an ordinary pair of tongs 13, the other portion being loosely pivoted thereto and provided with ameans Sforclampingthe two portions together for the purpose of taking hold of the carpet. Arranged at the forward portion of the frame 1 is a spring-pawl 9, which engages with the rack 7 to prevent any backward movement of the same. I now provide a number of rear-braces, each consisting of two side pieces 10, provided at their extremities with a mortise and a fixed pin 11 or circular opening, which serves as a means of connecting the several sections together and also to attach suitable cross-brace pieces 12 to keep the side pieces parallel.
In operation the carpet is clamped between the jaws of the tongs 7 and the rear braces adjusted from the frame 1 to one of the walls of the room. The lever 5 is operated back and forth, which, by means of the pawl 6, moves the rack-bar 7 forward, and it is held in that position by the spring-pawl 5), thereby stretching the carpet.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a carpet-stretcher, the combination, with the frame, a shaft journaled therein, a rack-bar, a lever secured to said shaft and connected with said rack-bar, and a springpawl forward of said lever engaging said rack-bar and preventing rearward movement thereof, of a series of adjustable braces at the rear end of said frame, each of said braces consisting of two side pieces having mortises at their rear ends and diagonal braces, all substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. The herein-described carpet-stretcher, comprising, in combination, a rectangular frame, a shaft extending transversely thereof and journaled at its ends therein, a lever mounted on said shaft, a longitudinal rackbar, tongs at the forward end of said rackbar, means for clamping the jaws of said tongs together, a pawl pivoted to said lever and engaging said rack-bar, a spring-pawl pivoted to the forward end of said frame, and a series of adjustable braces at the rear end of said frame, consisting of side bars having mortises and pins at their rear ends and diagonal braces, all substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto affix my signature this 11th day of February, A. D. 1891.
JNO. II. EGLER. [L. s.] In presence of CHARLES LARGE, M. E. HARRISON.
