UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY F. BOLTON, OF DOW CITY, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO NED R. WILDER, OF SAME PLACE.
CLOTHES-DRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 373,004, dated November 8, 1887. Application filed March 31, 1887. Serial No. 233,171. (Modeh) To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY F. BOLTON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Dow City, in the county of Crawford and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Driers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in that class of clothes-driers which are adapted to be secured to a wall or other support in a room, the arms of which may be folded, when not in use, so as to occupy anearly vertical position, thereby taking up but little room; and my invention consists in the construction, and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed outin the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure l is a front view of aclothes-drier constructed in accordance with my improvement, showing the arms elevated. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the arms in a horizontal position. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken through the line x m of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view.
A refers to asemicircular board, which constitutes the base of the clothes-drier, and to the under side is secured an angle-plate, a, having perforations, through one of which the connecting-rod passes, the other perforation being to provide a means for attaching the same to awall of an apartment. Above the base-board A is suitably attached, or it may be formed integral therewith, a smaller semicircular board, A, to which the lower ends of the vertical guide-bars B pass.
0 refers to the upper portion of the frame of the clothes-drier,.to the outer under edge of which are attached blocks C, which are wedgeshaped and set at a little distance apart to leaveparallel-sidedspacesbetween them. The outer edge of the board 0 is provided with slots registering with the spaces between the blocks 0, said slots and spaces being of a width to admit of the free movement of the drierarmsF within them. To the under side of the portion 0 is attached a semicircular plate or board, 0, to which the upper ends of the connecting-bars B are secured.
The top and bottom portions of the frame of theclothes-drier are connected to each other by a central bolt, D, the upper end of which serves to hold in place an angle-plate, 0, located above the boards 0, said bar passing from said angle-plate to the angle-plate a and through the parts, as shown, so that they may be readily and securely clamped together by tightening the nut on the lower end of the aforesaid bar. The under portions of the blocks 0 have secured thereto eyebolts or staples 6, through which pass a bent rod, E, which rod forms a bearing for the arms when placed in a horizontal position, said arms also bearing at their inner ends against the board 0''. The arms (indicated by F, and hereinbefore referred to,) are merely flat strips of suitable material, and they are provided at one end with transverse pins f, which engage with the vertical recesses b, which are formed in the bars B. The arms are also provided at their outer edges, near their lower ends, with projecting pins orknobs g, which may be grasped by the hand to raise or lower the arm. The lower ends of the bars B are cut away rearwardly from recess 1), as shown at b, said cut-away portion being preferably near the base thereof, and this construction, in connection with the rod E, provides a means for inserting and removing the arms F. Whenitis desired toinsert said arms, the front ends of the arms F are inserted between the vertical bars 13 from the rear in'a horizontal position, and when in such position the transverse pins f thereon can be passed forward through the cut-away part 1) into the vertical recess b. Should one of the arms become broken in use, it can be removed simply by sliding the curved rod E through the eyebolts, so as to permit the arm to fall to a horizontal position, when it can be removed by sliding the same out through the open back of the frame.
When the parts are arranged as shown in Fig. 1 in the drawings, to bring the arms to a ICO horizontal position it is only necessary to grasp the knobs and elevate said bars, when they will assume a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 2.
5 I claim 1. In a elothesdrier, the semicircular top and bottom plates having grooved bars B between the same, arms I,with projecting pins, which are adapted to engage with the grooves IO in the bars, and a semicircular rod, E, adapted to form abearing for the arms F, when placed inahorizontalposition, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a clothes-drier constructed substan- 15 tially as described, the top and bottom plates, the guide-bars B, provided with longitudinal recesses, and near one end with horizontal cutaway portionsb, in combination with the movable arms F, having pins f, and removable rod E, substantially as shown, and for the pur- 2o pose set forth.
3. In a clothes-drier, a top plate provided with a series of radiating slots, wedge-shaped blocks 0, attached thereto between the slots and eyebolts located under said blocks, slotted 2 5 bars B, suitably secured to the under side of said top plate and to a semicircular base-plate,
a bar, D, extending through the top and baseplate, arms F, provided with transverse pivot pins, and a removable rod, E, supported by 30 the eyebolts, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HEDRY F. BOLTON.
