ALBIAN L. ABBEY, 0F NORTH SPRINGFIELD, PENNSYLVANIA.
CLOTHES-DRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,631, dated May 9, 1882.
i Application inea inamn 13, issn. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that I, ALBIAN L. ABBEY, of North Springfield, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new andusefulImprovementsin Clothes-Racks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, whieh willenableothers skilledin the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the rack folded. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional.
View. Fig.3 is across-section; and Fig. 4. is a perspective View, showing the rack extended. Corresponding parts in the several iigures are denoted by like letters of reference.
rlhis invention relates to clothes-racks or clothes-driers; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same,
` which will be hereinafter fully described, and
particularly pointed out in the claims.
In -the drawings hereto annexed, A represents a rectangular frame of suitable dimensions, the sides of which have longitudinal grooves B to receive a sliding plate, C, fitted between the sides, and adapted to slide the entire length of the frame.
D is a plate or bracket hinged to slide C, near its upper end or edge, and provided with a hinged brace, E, having an eye, G, sliding upon a loop, H, secured to the slide-C, so as to permit the hinged plate or bracket D to be folded, and sustain it when open or extended, as in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The plate D is wider than. plate C, so that when it is folded it will strike the sides of' frame A, as shown in Fig. 1, and thus be prevented from passing through said frame.
Secured to the hinged plate or bracket D is a bail or strap, I, of wire or other suitable material, upon which a number of clothes bars or arms, J, are hinged or attached by means of eyes or staples K. An additional central bar or arm, L is firmly secured, by screws or otherwise, to the bracket D.
M is a hook or catch pivoted to the side of frame A. When the rack is folded, as in Fig. 1, said hook may be placedover the side of bracket D, thus retaining the latter in its folded position The arms or bars J L are made slightly tapering, and the width ot' the entire set of bars, when placed closely together, must not exceed the space between the sides B of frame A, in which the said bars are accommodated when the rack is folded. The bars J L may be held together by a ring, N, which is slipped over their ends, as shown. The bar L, being rigidly secured to bracket D, serves, in connection with said ring, to hold the bars J immovably in relation to bracket D when the device is folded.
From .the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
The frame A may be suspended, by means of a staple, upon the wall of a room, near the ceiling, and its lower end may also be suitably secured tothe wall in order to hold the device firmly. A
The slide G is at the lower end of frame A when the device is folded, and the bracket D is folded up against the frame, where it is held by hook M, the clothes bars or arms fitting between the sides of the frame.
To extend the device for use, the bracket D is released from hook M and folded down to a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 4, in which position it is supported by the brace E. The ring N is now removed from the bars or arms J L, which may then be spread to a con- Y venient position for receiving the clothes to be dried. then the rack is filled the slide C, with the bracketV and supporting-arms, may be moved up to near the top of frame A, where it is retained by friction, the clothes being thusout of the way and out of the reach of children.
This device is simple and inexpensive, it occupies but little space, and whether in or out of use is never in the way.,
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to'secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesi 1. The combination, with the. frame A,- of the slide C, the hinged plate D, the tapering clothes-bars hinged, as shown, to said plate, and the ring Nfor holding them together, so that they may be folded between the sides of frame A, as set forth.
IOO
2. The combination of the frame A, slide G, In testimony that I claim the foregoing as having hinged bracket D, provided with rigid my own I have hereto affixed my signature in central bar, L, and hinged tapering arms J, presence of two witnesses. and the ring N, as and for the purpose set 5 forth. ALBIAN L. ABBEY.
3. As an improvement in clothes racks or i driers, the combination of the frame A, slide' Witnesses:
C, hinged bracket D, brace E, loop H, arms A. DENIs,
or hars J L, and the hook M, all arranged and J. ROBT. HALL.. 1o operating substantially as set forth.
