MARY S. O. HARTMANN, OF REDDIN G, CALIFORNIA.
PASTRY- SHELF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,748, dated October 6, 1891.
Application filed October 16, 1890.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARY S. C. HARTMANN, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Bedding, Shasta county, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Pastry-Shelves; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to a novel construction for pastry-shelves; and it consists of a series of shelves, a support and adjustment therefor, and in certain details of construcreference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of my device, showing the arrangement. Fig. 2 is a transverse Vertical section of the upper part AAare the two sides, which maybe made of wood or other suitable material. I have here shown them as made of wood, having narrow saw-kerfs or channels B made on the inner faces or the faces which are to stand toward each other. These channels extend from the front to the point near the rear edges of the sides A, but are not cut entirely through these which the shelves are arrested and prevented from sliding through.
The shelves may be made of galvanized iron or other suitable material. If the. channels B are only saw-kerfs, then galvanized iron or thin sheet metal will be preferable; but if the channels are made sufficiently wide the shelves may be made of wood. Opposite edges of the shelves 0 rest in these channels 13, and the sides are held together by means of a plate D at the top, which is bent over and has flanges at the turned-over edges, as shown at E, which enter the sawkerfs or channels on the outer faces of the sides A and near the top. This plateD thus serves as a clamp to hold the two sides A together at the top, and it may also be used as a supplemental shelf when required.
In addition to this I have shown rods F, which are hinged to the front and rear edges of one of the sides A and have hooks at the Serial No. 368.357- (llo model.)
opposite ends, which hook into screw-eyes or staples G upon the edges of the opposite sides A, so as to hold the sides firmly together and prevent their separating, while the shelves 0, entering the slots or channels in the inner faces of the sides A, keep them from being forced together.
Each of the shelves 0 and the top D have holes H made near one edge, and any one or more of the shelves may be taken out and hung upon hooks I, which are fixed in one of the sides A, as shown.
WVhen the device is in use, it may stand in a closet or any suitable place, and pics or other kinds of pastry may be placed 011 each of the shelves. 5
If desired, a dampened cloth or other screen may be hung over the set of shelves, hanging down upon each side, so as to keep outfiies or insects and prevent the articles on the shelves from being dried too rapidly by the heat.
If it be found necessary to increase the capacity, I use an additional set of shelves constructed in precisely the same manner as those herein described, and they are connected together by means of hooks and eyes, as shown at J, the hooks being preferably secured to the lower set of shelves and the eyes to the upper ones. By hooking these together the device will be made taller and will add as many shelves as there may be in the added section.
\Vhen the device is entirely out of use, it may be reduced in space by taking the shelves out, separating thesides by unhooking the rods F, and the sides may be hung up in any suitable place by means of holes K, which are made in them, and the shelves can then be hung upon the hooks I upon the outer sides by mean a .e eore describec, whole being very compact and out of the way when not in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A pastry-shelf consisting of wooden sides channeled to receive the horizontally-sliding shelves, .themetallic top or cover extend-- ing beyond the sides and having the ends I sponding edges of the other side, substanhent downward and inward and fitted within tially as herein described. 10 corresponding grooves in the upper ends of In witness whereof I have hereunto set my the sides, whereby said top serves as a clamp hand.
5 to hold the upper ends of the sides against the MARY S. C. HARTMANN.
ends of the shelves, and the hooks swiveled to Witnesses: opposite edges of one of the sides and extend- J ULIA SATTERLEF,
