SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,190, dated December 15,1891.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY J. MoYER, of Frackville, in thel county of Schuylkill and State ot' Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Knockdown Safe, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in that variety of safes which are used to hold fruits, vegetables, and other food products; and the object of my invention is to provide a convenient, inexpensive, and thoroughlyventilated safe, which may be taken apart or set up very'quickly and easily. By having the safe constructed in this manner it may be readily taken apart to be washed, it will occupy but little space, so that it may be cheaply shipped, and a safe of large size may be easily carried into a building and set up in a desired place.

To this end my invention consists in a knockdown safe constructed substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accom panyin g drawings, forming a part of this speciiication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the safe embodying my invention, showing the front, one end, and the top of the same. Fig. 2 isa vertical cross-section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 3 is a Vertical longitudinal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, a portion being broken away to show the connection between the safe-frame and the top of lthe safe.

The safe A is constructed with openings through the sides and ends, said openings being covered with screen-cloth, as described hereinafter, so that the safe will be thoroughly ventilated and will also be protected yfrom vermin.

The safe is provided at the four corners with suitable standards B, which are mounted on legs B', and the end standards are connected at the top and bottom bythe crossstrips b. The other portions of the safe may be separated from the standards, and the standards may thus be packed together when the safe is taken apart.

On the bottom of the sate and at each end are ledges C,whioh are fixed to the crossy strips b and which have Vertical perforations and said ledges are adapted to support the central shelf E, and, if desirable, more ledges may be arranged within the safe and other shelves provided. vThebottom D consists of two similar portions D', which are provided on the under side with tenons d, which extend downwardly into perforations c of the ledges C, and thus hold the bottom in place. The pieces D', comprising the bottom, are connected by hinges d', so that they may` easily be folded together, and near the outer edge .of each piece is a longitudinal shoulder cl2 to receive the back and front of the safe. The central'shelt" E comprises two similar pieces E', which are connected by hinges e and are provided with depending tenons e', which extend downwardly in the perforation c of the ledges C, the shelves being supported upon the brackets, as described.

The top F of the sate lis composed of two similar pieces F which are hinged together by the hinges f', each piece F having a longitudinal rib f thereon adapted to shut inside lthe front and back portions of the safe, so as tenons f2, which tit in the sockets b in the 1 upper cross-pieces b, and the top is thereby held firmly in place. The back ot the safe is formed of two vertically-swinging doors G, which are of a size to just form the back of the safe and which are connected centrally by the hinges g.

The front of the safe is composed of two horizontally-swingingA doors H, which are of a size to just form the front and which are hinged to the front standards B by the hinges h, the doors being held together by the hook j and eye j', and similar hooks and eyes are applied to the top and the end standards of the safe and to the back and the end standards, so that any of the parts may be removed by simply releasing the hooks from the eyes It will be seen that the ends of the safe,

the doors G, forming the back, and the doors IOO H, forming the front, are all open in the center, except for the covering K of screen-cloth, which is preferably of wire, and the safe is thus provided with means for ventilation and is also protected against vermin. As shown in the drawings, the screen-cloth K is held in place by the moldings la, although it may be fastened in any suitable manner.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that the safe may be readily taken apart and that the front, back, bottom, and top, and the central shelf also, may be folded together so as to occupy but little space.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A knockdown safe comprising two pairs of end standards, each pair being connected, as shown, the upper cross-strips of the standards having sockets in their upper face, and the standards having inwardly-projecting ledges with perforations therein, the sectional and folding bottom having depending tenons to t the perforations of the ledges, a central folding shelf having depending tenons to lit the perforations of the ledges, a sectional and folding top havin-g depending tenons to it the sockets of the crossfstrips, a back formed of two vertically-swinging doors, and a front formed of two horizontally-swinging doors, the four sides of the safe having openings therein covered by screen-cloth, substantially having inwardly-extending ledges with vertical perforations therein, a bottom consisting of two hinged pieces having depending tenons to fit the perforations of the ledges, a central shelf formed of hinged sections and having depending tenons to fit the perforaf tions of the ledges, a top formed of hinged sections and having depending tenons to fit the sockets of the cross-strips, a back formed of vertical folding doors, and a front formed of horizontally-swinging doors, the sides of the safe having screen covered openings therein and the separable parts being connected by hooks and eyes, substantially as described. i HENRY J.
