Description

H. C. EMERY. ATTACHMENT To SAW-BUCKS.
No. 194,229. Patented Aug".14,1877.
N.PETERS, IIHOTWLITMDGRAPNEK WASHINGTON, D O.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIOE.
HENRY G. EMERY, OF FLOURTO'WN, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHMENTS TO SAW-BUCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,229, dated August 14, 1 877; application filed January 22, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY O. EMERY, of Flourtown, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and usefullmprovement in Retaining Devices for Saw-Bucks, &c., ofwhich the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to combine with a saw-buck a device through the medium of which a log of wood can be firmly held by the operators feet while it is being sawed, the invention being applicable to other purposessuch, for instance, as the retention of a barrel-churn while it is being operated.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved saw-buck, and Fig. 2 a side view of the same.
Each end frame of the saw-buck consists, as usual, of two bars, A A, crossing each a other, the two frames being connected together by the cross-bar B.
D D are two foot-boards, hinged together at a point, at, in or near a vertical line drawn through the center of the frame.
To the hinges is connected the lower forked end a of the rod H, the upper end of which is also forked, so as to present two arms, d d, one on each side of the cross-bar B of the frame.
To the arm d is connected a chain, m, and to the arm (1 a pawl, h, terminating at its outer end in a hook adapted to the links of the chain.
The log, G, to be sawed is placed on theframe in the usual position the chain m passed over it, and the pawl hooked into one of the links of the chain.
The operator, placing one footon one of the boards, D or D, or standing on one of these boards, depresses the same, and, consequently,
through the medium of the rod H, chain m, and pawl h, binds the log G so tight in its bearings that it will be retained in a proper steady condition While it is operated on.
There may be but one foot-board; but I prefer two, hinged together, as shown. Inthe present instance the rodHis made separate from the fork a, and screwed into the latter, so as to be adjustable vertically therein, a plan which I prefer, and the rod is connected to the cross-bar of the frame by a spring, at, the tendency of which is to maintain the inner edges of the boards D D in the elevated position shown in Fig. 1.
It will be evident that the device may be used for retaining a barrel-churn or other object which it is desirable to maintain in a steady condition on a frame. w
i I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with a saw-buck or other like frame, of the chain m, hooked pawl h, the rod H, and foot-board, all substantially as described.
2. The combination of the boards D D, hinged together, with the rod H, hinged to the said boards, substantially in the manner described,
3. The rod H, forked at its upper end, and made adjustable at its lower end in the fork a, constructed as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY G. EMERY.
Witnesses HERMANN MOESSNER, HARRY SMITH.
