Description

E. G. BUDD.
Improvement in Sawing-Machns.
N0` 130,840, Patented Aug`.27,1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ENOS GOBLE BUDD, OF BU'DDS LAKE, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT 1N sAwlNG-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,840, dated August 27, 1572.
Specification describing an Improved Sawing-Machine, invented by ENOS GoBLE BUDD,
' of Budds Lake, in the county of Morris and -proved machine attached to and operating (or ready for operation) upon a log.
The frame A is formed of two vertical iron standards, united by a cross-bar at the top, and provided with feet or sharp ends, which enter the log L. The frame is rmly braced by two sets of rods, ds and es, which have hooks p for takin ginto the log at d cls. The saw I is secured at each end in clamps HS is, which are formed on or attached to the vertical bars GB passing through the sockets F on the ends of the bar E. Said bar E passes through vertical slots, at c c, in the frame A. The two sets of lazy-tongs7 B B are connected at their outer ends with the bar E by pins or bolts b b s working in slots BS, and at their inner ends to the bars or levers C*l CS', pivoted respectively, at as and as' to a central portion of the vertical frame. To impart an oscillating movement to levers Cs CS I employ a balance-wheel, D, having a handle, K, and' mounted on a crank-shaft, h, which passes through the beam D. This beam is connected with the ends of the lever CS by bars C.
The operation is as follows: To prepare the frame to be set upon a log the saw is secured firmly by tightening the screws g3 g3. The frame is then hoisted into position, and the brace-rods properly arranged and hooked into the log. The screws g3 being loosened so as to allow vertical play to the guide-bars or handles G, the saw is ready to operate. Upon turning the wheel D the beam Ds is oscillated by the crank-shaft h, and a similar movement necessarily communicated to the corresponding beam or lever OS. This will have the eiect to alternately contract and extend the respective lazy-tongs,7 one being always in the act of opening as the other is closing, and, inasmuch as they, are connected with the saw, a reciprocating movement of the latter is obtained.
It will be observed that the lever CS can act on the lever Cs only through the medium of the first sets of cross-bars of the tongs. The gravity of the saw insures its descent and ofiicient action on the log when reciprocated as desired.
This machine is light and portable, easily set up or changed in position, comparatively inexpensive in construction, and may be operated by one man.
What I claim as new isl. In combination with the frame A for supporting and carrying the operative mechanism of a saw, the brace and hook rods ds dEJ and es e2, all as shown and described, whereby said frame is adapted to be secured to a log, as specified.
2. The combination of the two sets of lazytongs B B with the bar E, sockets F, saw I, guide-bars GS, frame A, as set forth.
3. The combination of the two sets of lazytongs77 B B, bar E, sockets f f, guide-bars GB,
saw I, frame A, beams or levers OS CE and DE,
connecting-bars C, crank-shaft 'h,- and wheel D, as speciiied.
