Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' DANIEL S. MERRITT, OF WENONA, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN -Roo-cur ERs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 16, 138, dated January 6, 1874; application filed May 29, 1872. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL S, MEBRITT, of Wenona,in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented certain Improvements in Iron-Cutters, of which the following is 2 specification:
My invention relates to the arrangement of the movable jaws A and B, which, upon the downward stroke of the lever, are brought together, each moving half the distance, thereby saving half the travel of the lever, and each jaw performing half the work, both being provided with cutting-blades. V
' Figure-1 is a side or front view of my machine. Fig, 2 is a cross-section of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are the movable jaws.
Manner of construction-I take a bar of iron set on its edge with a T at. each end, marked D, and upon it, at points a and b, are fastened double upright standards, marked (3 and E. Between the standards marked are placed shears, marked A and B, said shears being joined by a bolt passing through the standards 0, at a point marked 41, and through shears at points marked ef, said standards 0 being held together at the top by abolt, marked 9 At the small end of the lower shear B are fastened by a bolt, at a point marked h, double iron straps marked G, said iron straps being fastened at the upper ends by a bolt to lever lllalki d. I. at point c, said lever F passing through standards marked E, and being fastened to said standards E by a bolt. Then, at a point marked j are fastened double iron straps, marked H, in the same .manner as at the point marked "6, said straps being carried up to the small end of the shear marked A, and fastened to it by a bolt at a point marked h; said lever F being continued from point j to Z, at which point is a socket marked m, to which may be attached an arm of any length. I claim- The jawsA and B, in combination withthe lever F and straps G and H, by which they are operated, and standards G and E, so arranged that each jaw shall movehalf the distance, and perform half the work, substantially as described.
DANIEL S. MERRITT.
