RANDOLPH O. ROBINSON, OF eLIDDnN, IOWA.
CARPET STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 283,818, dated August 28, 1883. N
Application filed June 27,1883. (No model.)
T0 coZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RANDOLPH O. ROBIN- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at G-lidden, in the county of Carroll and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oarpet-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the'invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to whieh it appertains to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective viewof my improved carpet-stretcher. of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through line x x in Fig. 2 5 and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view, showing a somewhat modified construction of my device.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to carpet-stretchers; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A is a box provided with a bottom, B, and open at both ends. Into one of the open ends is inserted the shank C of the head D, which is constructed with a series of notches or recesses, E, the projecting fingers F between said notches being provided with bent hooks G,
which are pointed at the outer ends, so that they may readily pierce the carpet which is to be stretched. Into the other end of box A is inserted a bar, H, which is shouldered at I, where it bears against the box. This bar or arm H is made in several lengths or pieces, which may be coupled together so as to extend the arm to the requisite length required in using the apparatus. The sliding shank O has a series of notches, J, on its upper side, which are adapted to receive the outer end of arm K of a jointed lever consisting of the parts K and L, jointed or hinged together at M. The inner arm, L, is hinged upon box A, at N, so that when the free end of arm K is stepped into one of the notches J, and the lever depressed at its joint or hinge M, head D will be pushed out of the box, and by successively shifting arm K from one of the notches Fig. 2 is a side view to the other it will be seen that the head is gradually pushed out of the box in which it slides. It is prevented from slipping back by a rack-bar, O,'one end of which is hinged upon the top of the box, while the other end engages astud or projection, I, on the top of head D.
Instead of using the jointed lever K L for working the device, the shank C may be constructed as a rack-bar, adapted to engage a toothed wheel, Q, journaled in a slot in the top of box A, and provided with a suitable pawl-and-ratchet mechanism for preventing it from slipping back, the wheel being turned by a removable lever, B, which may be shifted as required in working the wheel. This construction I have shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation of this device will be readily understood without requiring extended explanation. The arm H is extended by adding to it a sufiicient number of lengths or sections until it will reach one side of the room, the hooks G on head D being inserted into the carpet, which is to be tacked against the wall opposite. By then working the jointed lever in the manner described, the
edgeof the carpet will be forced up against the wash-board of the wall, the spaces or recesses E between the fingers F admitting of the insertion of the tacks and tack-hammer in hammering down the tacks without removing the stretcher until after this is accomplished.
Having thus described my invention,I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. Theconibination, in a carpet-stretcher, of the box A B, head D, constructed with aseries of fingers, F, having hooks G, and provided with the shank- 0, having notches J, extensible arm or bar H, shouldered at I, jointed lever L K, hinged at one end upon box 'A B and adapted to be stepped with its free end into any one of the series of notches J, and rack-bar O, hinged at one end upon the top of box A B and adapted to engage with its free end a stud, 1?, upon the sliding head, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and set forth.
2. The combination, in a carpet-stretcher, of
the box A B, head D, constructed with a series 2 I asasns with the shank O, forming a rack-bar, extensi- V ble arm 0r bar H, shouldered at I, toothed Wh'ee1Q,provided With the removable lever B, and rack-bar O, hinged at one end upon 5 the top of box A B and adapted to engage with its free end a stud, 1?, upon the sliding head, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature 10 in presence of two witnesses".
