Be it known that I, BRADLEY MANNING, a citizen of the United States, residingat Swanton, in the county of Fulton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oarpet-Stretchers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to carpet-stretchers, and has for its object the production of a device for the purpose which will be simple, durable, compact, light, and readily adjustable to any sized room.

The device is designed to be braced at one end, either by resting against the sub-base or by engaging with one edge of the carpet, and the other end is engaged with the carpet. The rod connecting the two ends, or head and foot of the device, is hinged. Now, by partially closing the hinge the head and foot are brought closer together. In this position the foot is braced and the head is engaged with the carpet, and by opening the hinge,which is accomplished by pressing down on the rod,

the head and foot are separated or moved farther apart and stretch the carpet.

The principal feature of my invention relates to the devices for pivotally connecting the parts of the rod which connects the head and foot, and for limiting the movement of the said parts when the device is properly adjusted, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a carpetstretcher of my invention, showing it lengthened out; Fig. 2, a side view of the stretcher, showing its operation by dotted lines; and

The carpet'stretcher is composed of a head, A, foot A, and an intermediate rod connecting the head and foot, comprising two or more parts or sections, 0 O 0 having a hingetions, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The

part or section O has the foot A at one end and the clip D near its other end to receive one end of the lengthening section C and is provided with a series of horizontal openings, d, to adjustably connect it with B when the intermediate section,O, is dispensed with, and vertical openings at to receive the pin eflwhich adj ustably connects O therewith.

The extension piece or section 0 is used only for lengthening the stretcher, as shown most clearly by Fig. 1, and may be dispensed. with, as shown by Fig. 3.

When the stretcher is adjusted to the requisite length, the pin 6 is passed through the plates B and the section embraced between the plates B, and forms the pivotal connection between G and the adjacent section, whether 0" or O. The upward movement of the sections is limited by the stop-pin c.

When desired to stretch only one edge of a carpet, the foot is placed against the sub-base and the head is engaged with the carpet; but for stretching both edges of the carpet the head and foot are each engaged with the opposite edges of the carpet.

To operate the device the sections are tipped up, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and the head and foot are engaged with the carpet. Now, by bearing down on the sections they will straighten out, as shown by full lines in said Fig. 2, and stretch the carpet, as will be readily appreciated.
