i S. G. HARLAN.
' CARPET STRETOHER.
No. 407,823. Patented July 30, 1889.
- WITNESSES V IN 71M? WW4 WQM' N. PETERS, Phalmukhographer, Washington, u. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL O. HARLAN, OF LAKE CITY, MINNESOTA.
CARPET-STRETCH ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,823, dated July 30, 1889.
Applieation filed February 23 1889. Serial No. 300,951. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL C. HARLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake City, in the county of Vabasha and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Carpet-Stretcher, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in carpet-stretchers, and is so constructed and arranged that a person while standing upright can easily and quickly stretch carpets in rooms or halls from four feet to one hundred or more feet in length. It is also. constructed so as to hold the carpets at any degree of tightness desired while being tacked down. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichv Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a side View showing the different parts enlarged. Fig. 3 is abottom or under side view of the separable hinge. Fig. l is a detached view of a portion of the detachable bar, showing the fork. Fig. 5 is a side view showing the edge of the fork. Fig. 6 is a View of the head.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the operating-lever, to which is securely attached the flanges a, which flanges are located substantially as shown in the drawings. To the operating-lever A is securely attached the head or cross-bar B, which is provided with the teeth t, which are for the purpose of engaging the carpet. The detachable bar C is provided upon one end with the hook G, which is for the purpose of engaging the bolt p, and thereby hinging the operating-lever A and the bar 0 together.
To the operating-lever A is pivotally attached the retaining-bar WV, which bar is provided with a series of apertures for the purpose of engaging the pin g on the bar C, and thereby securely hold the operating-lever A and the detachable bar 0 at any desired point of adjustment within the limits of the apertures in the bar IV. The opposite end of the detachable bar 0 is provided with the fork f, which is for the purpose of engaging the carpet.
In use, when it is desired to stretch a carpet, the head B and the fork are placed upon the carpet designed to be stretched, when the operating-lever A is pressed downward, thereby forcing the head B away or from the fork f. It will be seen that by providing the hook G the bar 0 can be easily detached'from the operating-lever A, and said operating-lever and bar C placed side by side, thereby formin g a carpet-stretcher which can be easily transported from place to place, and at the same time easily adjusted for use.
Having fully described my invention,wh at I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the operating-lever A, provided with the flanges a, and the bolt p, the detachable bar 0, provided with the hook G, adapted to engage the bolt 1), the pivoted retaining-bar WV, provided with a series of apertures adapted to engage the pin y, located on the bar C, the head B, and the fork f, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
SAMUEL c. HARLAN.
