ALEXANDER I1. DUNBARJOF SHELDON, ILLINOIS. Letters Patent No. 73,310, dated January 14,1868.
IMPROVED GARPET-STREI'GHER.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER. L. DUNBAR, of Sheldon, in the county or -Iroquois, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Carpet-Stretcher; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to a novel andusefnl implement or device for the stretching of carpets, when to be laid or put. down, by tacking or otherwise, upon floors, which implement is so constructed that it can,
after. being applied to the carpet, be suitably operated to stretch it and there hold it. In the accompanying plate of drawings my improved carpet-stretcher is illustrated- Figure 1 being a side elevation or view of the same, and
Figure 2 a plan or top view of one end thereto.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A, in the drawings, represents the stretcher, which is made in sectional bars or pieces B, pivoted together at their ends, with the'extreme ends of the outer sections provided with a cross-bar, O, braced by rods D. These cross-bars C each have a series of teeth or prongs, a, by which the stretcher is made to engage with the carpet, when brought to bear against the carpet for stretching it, by pressing upon the stretcher in the proper direction to elongate it.
The pivots to the sections I prefer to have in. the form of thumb-screws, so as to enable the parts to be I detached and attached more readily, for lengthening or shortening the stretcher.
I claim as new, and desire to securebyLetters Patcnt The carpet-stretcher, constructed as described, consisting of the sections B, of equal length, pivoted together, said-stretcher provided at each end with a toothed head, "whereby the carpet can be stretched to be nailed down upon two sides of the room at once, without removing the stretcher, as herein shown and described.
ALEXANDER L. DUN BAR.
