UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER MITCHELL, OF FBEDERICTON, NEW BRUNSWICK, CANADA.
CARPET-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,951, dated March 15, 1881.
` Application filed November 21,1880. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER MITCHELL, of'Fredericton, in the Province of New Brunswick and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a top view ofthe stretcher folded.,
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
The object of my invention is to produce a carpet-stretcher which is simple and inexpensive in construction, easily operated, and will occupy but little space when not in use.
In the drawings, AA are two parallel bars, of suitable length, which are united at one end by the solid cross-head B, and at the opposite end by a metal strap, C.
D is a block, which is hinged upon the crosshead B, and provided on its liat under side with one or more spurs, d.
E is a bar or lever, which has its fulcrum upon a pin or bolt, e, which may be inserted into any one of a series of holes, f f f, in the parallel bars A A, so as to adjust the position and leverage of lever E relative to said bars. The forward end of lever E has a head, F, upon the under side of which is secured a ser rated plate, Cr, the teeth or serrations g of which project in front of head F and are curved slightly downward.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation of my improved carpet-stretcher will readily be understood without requiring further explanation.
For large carpets it is best, rst, to lay the carpet on the floor with its center in the middle of the room, so that its sides will be equidistant from the walls. It is then tacked down temporarily in the center, after which the hinged block or shoe D is fastened over the middle of the carpet, the stretcher being worked round gradually to all sides from this central fulcrum.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire 'to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination of the parallel bars A A,
perforated atf, and having solid cross-head B and re-enforcing strap C, hinged block or shoe D, armed with a spur or spurs, d, adjustable fulcrum-pin e, and lever E, having head F and toothed plate G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALEXANDER MITCHELL.
