Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. v
THEODORE H. BRUMFIELD, OF GEDDES, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT m CARPET-STRETCHIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 92,052, dated June 19, 1877 application filed May 7, 1877. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, THEODORE H. BRUM- FIELD,'ofGeddes, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet- Stretchers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
' The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a carpetstretchcr, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, which fully illustrates my invention, A represents the head, provided with teeth a a, as shown. This head has also near its outer edge a series of holes, I) b, at suitable distances apart, and in the center of its outer edge is a. notch, d, as shown.
To the back or inner edge of the head A is secured a raek-banB, by means of two eccentries, h IL, which are screwed into the head,
and pass through slotted side projections M at the end of the rack-bar, so that by turning said cams one fourth of a revolution the rackbar becomes fastened to the head. The projcctions i 'i also extend upward, one on each side of the rack-bar, and form guides for a slotted bar, 0,- which is placed on top of the rack-bar.
The bar 0 is, at one end, provided with a spike, c, and in the bar is pivoted a hoolc pawl, D. E is a wire bail pivoted to the bar (3.
G is the operating-lever, formed at one end with a hook, m, and claw a, and at the other end with a. nail-set, 10.
forth.
The toothed head A is placed-at the edge of the carpetto be stretched, with the ratchetbar B extending inward. The slotted bar 0 is then placed on the ratchet-bar, and the spike e driven into the floor close up to the Wash-board. The lever G is then hooked on the bail E, and the claw it, worked in the ratchet-bar, will send the toothed head A with the carpet snug to the wash'board, the
pawl J.) holding it there, and the notch din the head allows the spike e to en ter the same,
. so that the head can go snug to the base with the carpet. The tacks are then placed through the holes I), and the nail-set p placed on the tack, when it can be driven complete.
It will be seen that by my invention the carpet can be tacked down completely after it is stretched before removing the stretcher.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure'by Letters Patent, is I l. The combination of the toothed head A, ratchet-bar B with slotted projections 'i t, and the. screw cams or eccentrics h h, substantially as and for the purpose herein set 2. The slotted bar'U, with spike e, pawl D, and hail E, in combination with the ratchetbar B, toothed and perforated head A, with notch and an operating-lever, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 30th dayof April, 1877.
THEODORE H. BRUMEIELD.
