Description

UNITED STATES rrron JOHN NIVER', OF SHERMAN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-STRETCHERS.
Specification forxning part of Letters Patent No. 156,494, dated November 3, 1874 3 application filed August 22, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN NIVER, of Sherman, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a ner and Improved Carpet-Stretcher, of which the following is a specication:
The invention consists of three parts-a stretching-bar, having a series ot' hooks and a perforated ange or rib on its under side; a standard for supporting it, and a detachable brace-rod, which connects them, and is made detachable and adjustablethe construction of said parts being such that the stretchingbar may be used to stretch the carpet in two opposite directions from the point where the standard is located, as hereinafter fully described.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved carpet-stretcher. Fig. 2 is a plan view ofthe stretcher inverted. p
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the stretching-bar; B, the standard; O, the brace, and D the toothed plate of the stretching-bar. The standard has an eyebolt or staple, E, and the stretching-bar has a series of hooks, F, along the under side of the upper portion, contrived so that, while the standard is retained in position after the carpet has been stretched one way, the stretching-bar may be disconnected and shifted Varound the reverse way, and hooked on again to stretch the carpet in the opposite direction, thus enabling it to be stretched from the center each way to the ends alike throughout.
The series of hooks employed enable the stretcher to be adapted for carpets of different breadths and lengths.
The brace O is detachably connected to the standard B by a spring-clip, Gr, to enable it to be shifted readily from side to side, the two opposite sides being each provided with a clip; and the stretching-bar has a series of holes, H, in ,a plate or flange along the bottom of the lower part, for connecting the brace to hold the carpet after being stretched until it is nailed.
I represents the spaces in the toothed stretching-plate in which to drive the tacks or nails after the carpet is stretched, and while being held by the stretcher.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the stretching-bar A,
having hooks F and perforated rib H, of the standard B, having clips G and staple E, and the detachable and adjustable connecting or brace'rod C, all as shown and described.
