(No Model.) F, O. HANNAHS.
FOLDING HEAD PIECE FOR COTS.
Patented Aug121, 1888.
N. PEIERS. Phntamhugnpher Washington a, c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED. O. HANNAHS, OF KENOSHA, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONEH ALF TO JOHNSON A. J AOKSON, OF SAME PLACE.
FOLDING HEAD-PIECE FOR COTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,131, dated August 21, 1888.
Application filed February 2, 1888. Serial No. 262,776. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED. O. HANNAHS, of Kenosha, in the county of Kenosha and State of \Visconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Head-Pieces for Cots; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an inexpensively made but strong and durable folding frame or head-piece for a cot orlow bed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cot with my improved folding headpiece attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan of the head-piece folded down upon a section of the cot. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of my improved head-piece,shown in connection with a section of the cot-frame, illustrating the manner of attaching the head -piece to the frame.
The form or mode of construction of the cot 2 is not material, provided it has an end piece or the side rails are so arranged that the folding head-piece can be secured thereto in the manner hereinafter described.
The cot shown in the drawings consists ofthe side rails, A A, the head and foot end pieces, B and O, the wire or cloth bottom D, and the supportinglegs E E. The headpiece is a kind of rack constructed, preferably, of two rails, F F, secured together by a series of spindles,
5 G G. This rack is hinged movably to the cot at its head-piece by means of the bent staples H H, the ends of which are placed one on either side of a spindle, G, and are then driven firmly into the cross-piece B. The upper or loop end of these staples is bent at right an- 0 glcs, or nearly so, to the free or tang ends, whereby when they are placed about the spindles G G and driven into the cross-piece B the head-piece is free to be folded forward down upon the surface of the cot and can be swung upwardly and rearwardly until the spindle engages in the loop of the staple and the for Ward part of the lower rail F strikes against the upright portion of the staple, in which position it is held against swinging farther rearwardly. To prevent the lower rail F from sliding out rearwardly when the headpiece is folded down in the manner shown in Fig. 2, a short pin, l, is inserted in the crosspiece B in the rear of the rail F. 55
It will be seen that the inclination of the head-piece with reference to the cot can be adjusted as desired by making the loop of the staple longer or shorter from its upright ends, as may be necessary to allow a further rearward movement of the top of the head-piece.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a cot and head-piece, bent staples connecting the head-piece and cot, 6 the two tangs of the staple being partly driven into the frame of said cot at one side of said head-piece and embracing between them a spindle or upright of said liead-piece,wl1ereby the latter may be folded flat onto the cot or supported at a radial angle thereto, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRED. O. HANNAHS.
