A. V. WISKO I (No Model.)
- CARPET FASTENEIL Patented Feb. 10,1891.
mung
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUSTIN V. \VISKOCIL, OF MILIVAUKEE, \VISCONSIN.
'CARPET-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,198, dated February 10, 1891. Application filed May 15, 1890; Serial No. 351,912. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTIN V.W1sKoc1L, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of \Visconsimhave invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Se curing Carpets to Floors,- of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
The method in common use of securing carpets to floors by means of tacks or small nails driven through the edge of the carpet into the floor is veryunsatisfactory, in that it takes considerable time either to secure the carpet to the floor or to release it therefrom, and the carpet is very liable to be torn or otherwise injured in the process of securing it to the floor and in releasing it therefrom.
My invention relates to a device whereby carpets may be readily and securely fastened to the floor quicklyand as readily and quickly released therefrom without injury to the carpet.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a small portion of a carpet with my improved device attached thereto, in connection with a small portion of a floor to which the carpet is secured by means of my device. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of what is shown in Fig. 1 on line 2 2 thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail of the hook forming a portion of my improved device.
In the drawings, A represents a portion of the floor of a room.
B is a portion of a carpet laid on and secured to the floor by means of my device.
My improved device consists of a strip of leather 0, which preferably should be of such strength and thickness as exist in leathers known as cowhide or light sole-leather. For use with carpets in rooms of the ordinary size of rooms in dwellings the strip of leather should be about one inch wide. The leather may be of any color, but preferably such as will harmonize with the carpet either by being of a similar shade or by such other shade as will not form an unpleasant contrast with the colors in the carpet. The strip of leather 0 is placed alongside and abuts against the edge of the carpet, and is secured to the edge of the carpet by sewing it thereto in the manner shown at D. The leather C is provided with a series of elongated slots E E, the slots being a few inches apart and being arranged longitudinally of the strip of leather or parallel to the adjoining edge of the carpet. Hooks F F, having screw-threaded shanks at right angles to the lip or overturned top part of the hook, are inserted in the floor at intervals corresponding with the distance that the slots E E are from each other, which hooks are locatedand arranged in such manner that their top ends when turned laterally will pass readily through the slots E E, and thereupon, being turned at right angles to such position, will engage the leather of the strip in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and thereby secure the carpet firmly but removably in place.
To release the carpet from the floor, it is only necessary to turn the top of the hook in line with the slots in the leather, when the leather may be readily removed from the hooks, thus releasing the carpet from the floor.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with a carpet,a leather strap placed alongside of and secured permanently to the edge of the carpet in suchmanner that the strap abuts against but does not overlap the carpet, the strap being provided with elongated slots at a distance apart parallel to the adjoining edge of'the carpet, and hooks having straight shanksinserted vertically and.
revolubl y in the strap, which hooks have horizontally-turned heads on one side of the shanks of such lengths as just to pass through the slots in the leather and adapted to be turned at right angles thereto, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in. presence of two witnesses.
AUGUSTIN V. VVISKOCIL. Witnesses:
C. T. BENEDICT, ANNA FAUST.
