SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,766, dated August 18, 1885.

Application filed March 19, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES GROVER, of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Carpet Stretcher, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a practical carpet-stretcher constructed to enable the user to both pull and push the carpet for stretching it, and one so constructed that it may be folded into small compass when not in use; and the invention consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of my new and improved carpet-stretcher. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the Same, taken on the line :0 w of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a detailed sectional plan view showing the device folded, parts being broken away.

A is the main lever of the carpet-stretcher. To this is connected the bar B, and to the outer end of the bar B is pivoted upon pin a the head-piece (1, which has teeth or points b formed upon or secured to its front and rear edges to engage with the carpet to be stretched. The rear end of the bar B is formed or provided with the plate portion F, which passes through a slot, f, made in the main lever A, and this plate portion F has the curved slot f formed in it, through which the pivot-pin g passes for securing the bar B to the main lever A. The curved slot f is for the main part made vertical, but is curved and enlarged, as shown at f*, to receive the pin g, and to form the hook or projection f that engages with the pin g and retains it in the enlargement f of the curved slot f, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, when the bar B is brought to position for use. When the device is not in use, the curved and vertical portion of the slot f enables the bar B to be folded flat against the main lever A, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the device may be conveniently carried, packed,

or stowed away.

The lower end of the main lever A is pro vided with one or more points, h, to pass through the carpet into the floor to fulcrum the lever.

I am aware that carpet-stretchers with pivoted head-pieces having teeth at one edge have heretofore been constructed but such head-pieces are not double-acting, to push or pull the carpet, and hence do not come within the scope of my invention, and I lay no claim thereto.

Having thus described my invention, what I claimras new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The carpet-stretcher herein shown and described, consisting of the main lever A, bar B, and head 0, pivoted to the bar B by central upright plates or lugs,and provided with points I) at both edges, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
