UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
JAMES S. HENDRIOKSON, 0F OLMSTED FALLS, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-S I'RETCHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 218,439, dated August 12, 1879; application filed June 17, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES'S. HENDRICK- SON, of Olmsted Falls, Ouyahoga county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oarpet-Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to more readily stretch or extend carpets or coverings for floors, and, when thus stretched, the slack to be held firmly in place by automatic action of the instrument, allowing the operator the use of both hands in tackingor otherwise securing or disposing of the carpet or covering.
This object may be attained by means of the following arrangement, reference being had to accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a perspective view: A lever, A, with handle attached at upper and lower end, provided with slightly-curved point, as shown; a curved or circular arm, B, firmly attached to lever A about one-third the distance up from curved point, said curved arm B gradually diminishin g in width toward the unsecured or extreme end, and with extreme end resting near or against lever A; an arm, 0, slightly curved and flattened at either end, attached to lever A at a point being the center of a circle described by arm B, and so attached as to have free action, to be provided with a slot, through whichis passed arm B, as shown; akey, E, with a shoulder at lower end and finger-lift at upper end, to be passed through slot in arm 0, in such manner as to bear upon the outer face of arm B, as shown, serving to lock or hold firmly armO at any given point on arm B; a spring, F, firmly attached to the under surface of arm 0, so constructed that the unsecured end thereof shall press firmly against the shoulder of key E, as shown, thus holding arm 0 at any given point on curved arm Bf a lever, D,
with claw or rake-head at lower end, the teeth of claw being set toward the point of lever A, lever D to be attached to the outer end of arm 0 in such manner as to have free action, and substantially as shown.
All of the above parts described are to be constructed of iron, stem-l, or other suitable materials.
For a convenient size for practical work, lever A should be from twenty to twenty-four inches in length, and the other parts of proportionate size, reference being had to accompanying drawing.
In operating this improvement, fix the point of long lever A and the claw or rake-head of lever D into the carpet or covering to be stretched in such position that lever D shall stand at an angle of about forty-five degrees, (45 By bearing down upon lever D, the key E adjusts itself, thus holding arm 0 and lever D in the position attained; and, finally, by applying force to the upper end of lever A, acting from the operator, the shortlevcr D is necessarily drawn toward lever A, and there held firmly by the automatic action. of key E, thus allowing the operator the use of both hands in securing or disposing of the carpet or covering as stretched.
What I claim as my invention and as new 1s- The combination of lever A with curved arm B, arm 0, key E, spring F, and lever D, with claw or rake-head attached, substantially as shown and described.
JAMES S. HENDRIGKSON.
