SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,417, dated May 23, 1882.

Be it known that I, JAMES M. HAWLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Odin, in the county of Marion and State of Illinois,
5 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Stretehers, of which the followingisa specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to carpet-stretchers;
1o and it consists in the construction and arrangement of its several parts, as will he hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my stretcher, and Fig. 2 is a top plan view.
r 5 A is the stretcher-s brace. To its near end is pivoted a short arm, a, through which is secured the brace-pin c', as shown.
B is the T- shaped stretcher. It is pivoted to the forward portion of the brace A, and in zo the outer side of the T-portion are pins b, by which it engages with the carpet. The rear end of the stretcher is formed into a handle, as shown, and has depending from it a hookrod, b', which engages with one of a series of 25 pins, c2, situated upon the side of the brace A.
In the operation ofthe device, the pin a. is
driven into the floor suticiently to hold the de vice. The handle of the stretcher is then raised, the pins b are hooked into the carpet, and the 3o handle pressed down, which acts to lengthen out the device and stretch the carpet. While the carpet is being tacked down the hook-rod b is attached to one of the pins a2 and the device Will be held in position.
1. Acarpet-stretcher consistingof the brace A, provided with an arm, a, in which is se cured a brace-pin, a', and of a stretcher, B, pivoted to the forward portion of the brace, and arranged to operate substantially as shown and 4o described.
2. In a. carpet-stretcher, the combination of the brace A, arm a, and its pin c with the T- shaped stretcher B, pivoted to the forward portion of the brace A, all arranged to operate 4 5 substantially as shown and described.
3. In a carpet-stretcher, the combination of the brace A, provided with pin-arm a and its pin a', with the T-shaped stretcher B, pivoted in to the former portion of vthe brace A. and 5o provided with a hook-rod, b', adapted to besecured to one of the pins a2, substantially as shown and described.
