SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,067, dated November 28, 1882.

Application filed September 8, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JOHN H. WILLIAMS and VoLNEY M. BRAFFETT, of Indianapolis, Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oarpet-Stretchers, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which is a perspective view of our device.

Our invention consists in providing a platform for the operator to kneel upon, and we preferably make this platform wide enoughto include a'breadth of carpet between its end supports, so that the carpet will stretch more readily.

Our invention further consistsin a rod or support upon which to rest the handle of the stretcher, and in jointing the handle of the stretcher so that it can readily be lifted and moved, and to give proper leverage.

In the drawing, A represents the platform audits supporting feet, on which the operator kneels; B, the handle, having a socket through which the bar or rod passes, and a jaw at D, which receives the end of the stretcher E, and to which it is secured bya bolt.

The operation of our device is simple. The operator, depressing the handle B, forces the teeth of the stretcher E into the carpet and pushes the carpet forward in the direction of the stretcher, and holds it firmly when it has reached the limit of its movement, and may be (No model.)

2. In a carpet-stretcher, a platform for the operator to rest upon, in combination with the handle and claw of the stretcher, substantially as described.

3. The combination of a claw for stretching carpets, jointed to its handle, with a fulcrum and a platform for the operator to rest upon, substantially as described.

4. The combination of the platform A, rod 0, socketed handle B, and claw E, the latter jointed to the handle, substantially as described.
