Description

s. AMIOK. CARPET 'STRETGHER.
(No Model.)
Patented Dec. 18, 1883.
4 MU Bi mu. m M m Vm A WITNESSES NITED STATES PATENT OFFrcE.
SAMUEL AMICK, OF PITTSBOROUGH, INDIANA.
CARPET-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,308, dated December 18, 1883.
No model.)
To all whom it may concern .Be it known that I, SAMUEL AMICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pitts borough, in the county of Hendricks and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oarpet-Stretchers; and
I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in carpet-stretchers, and has for its object to enable a single person to stretch and hold the I 5 carpet while being tacked, this object being attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure lis a side elevation. Fig. 2 is an end view, showing the base, the uprights, and the lever of the device, with the top end of the lever broken off. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the lever in its relative position to the base.
In this view the uprights are detached from the base, in order to show the spring-pawls and the manner of the'connection to the lever.
Fig. 4 is a detached View of the beams F F. The letter A indicates a base, to which are fastened two uprights, B B.
O is a lever having a slot, 0, in the lower part, and an offset, 0, to accommodate the beams FF. This lever is placed between the posts B B, and is pivoted thereto by the pivot E. The upper and lower ends of the slot 0 5 are provided with pawls or springs M M, which engage in ratchet-teeth a n in two beams, D D, pivotally attached at their outer extremities to beams F F by metal plates G G, having rivets or pivots g g y g. The
40 beams F F are provided, at their lower eX- tremities, with base or foot pieces H H, each piece having on the under side a double row of metal points, which engage with the carpet during the act of stretching. The beams F F have a series of spaced holes, I, in their upper ends, for the introduction of the pint for purposes of adjustment. The beam F has a row of staples, f, to receive a hook, J, which is attached to the lever O, by means of which the beams F F are held in position to keep the carpet stretched while being tacked.
In using the stretcher, set it in the room with the foot-pieces H H within six inches of the wall, then stand ,on the base A, and with one hand press down'the beams F F (forming the triangle) at the top, where the pin 1' is placed, and with the other hand work the lever backward and forward till the carpet is as tight as desired, then place the hook J in one of the staples f, which will retain the beams F F in the proper position while the carpet is being tacked, thus enabling the work of stretching and tacking a carpet to be done by a single person.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and to claim 1s 1. In a carpet-stretcher, the combination of 1 base A and posts'B B with lever (7, having slot 0, provided with springs M M, adapted to engage in ratchet-teeth n a, as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a carpet-stretcher, the base A, the posts B B, with lever O, and the ratchet-beams D D, in combination with the beams F F, 75 adapted to be held in position by the hook J and staples f, as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' SAMUEL AMIGK.
