ELON E. OASE, OF NOBLESVILLE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ALBERT M. BAKER, OF SAME PLACE.
CARPET-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,749, dated J' anuary 5, 1892.
Application filed June 20, 1891.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, ELON E. OASE, a citizen of the United States, 'and a resident of Noblesville, in the county of Hamilton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oarpet-Stretchers; and I do declare the following to vbe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a side view of the implement. Fig. 2 is also a side view of same in second position, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View in detail.
This invention has relation to carpetstretchers; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the upper lever provided at the outer end with a suitable handle and pointed at its forward end to engage the iioor near the Wall. This lever is pivoted orhung near its forward end between the upper ends of the two transverse connecting-bars c c, and the latter have pivoted between them at their forward ends, the tang or projection d of the short curved clamp-leverD. This clamplever D is pivoted at e forward of the transverse bars c c to the long curved clamp-lever D', which is confined between said bars. Both clamp-levers are provided with transverse jaws or clamps E E', located one above the other, and are designed to hold the carpet in the operation 0f stretching the latter, their opposite faces being roughened, as at f, to secure a better purchase on the carpet. The under surface of the lower jaw Eis provided with pointed vertical studs g to hold the carpet to the floor, in connection with pointed stud h at the outer curved end of the long clamp-lever D when the latter is forced down upon the floor after the carpet is sufficiently stretched. A lateral stud is provided for the clamp-lever D and engages the upper inclined edge of lever D to regulate the distance between the jaws by limiting the upward movement of said lever D. The rear endof the tang cl is provided with lateral offsets or studs s s, which are designed to en Serial No. 396,959. (No model.)
the wall. The edge of the carpet having previously been or being now introduced between the jaws E E', the longclamp-lever D is raised with the jaws and swung forward with the connecting-bars, the fulcrum of the latter being at their pivotal engagement with the upper straight 'lever A. In this manner the carpet is progressed toward the wall, and
the desired position havin g been attained the long curved clamp -1ever`D' is depressed, thereby causing the pointed studsg to pierce the carpet and enter the ioor, the pointed stud h at the lower end of the lever D pinning the carpet at the same time to the iioor in the rear, thus firmly securing it in place. The pointed straight lever A is now released from the iioor and drawn backward and downward upon the clamp-lever D, causing the transverse bars to engage the studs on the tang of the short clamp-lever D, thereby raising the upper jaw and releasing the carpet. In this horizontal position the straight lever is out of the way to enable the operator to tack the carpet to the floor.
What I claim is- In a carpet-stretcher, the lever A, pivoted between transverse bars c c at their rear ends, the short clamp-lever having the jaw E, and studs or projections t7 s s, pivoted in the rear between said bars at their forward ends and pivoted centrally forward of said bars to the clamp-leverD, having the rear pointed stud h and the forward transverse jaw E', provided with pointed studs or teeth on its under surface for engaging the carpet, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witn esses.
ELoN E. criss.
