UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB B. RUSSEL, OF DELRAY, MICHIGAN.
CARPET-STRETCHER.
SEECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 695,495, dated March 18, 1902.
Application tiled December 2,1901. Serial No. 84,338. (No model.)
'and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. v This invention has lrelation to improvements in carpet-stretchers; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and ar.
rangement of parts of which it is composed,
all as will be hereinafter more fully explained,g
and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which- Figure l represents a side View of my improved carpet-stretcher. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of the roller, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the hand-lever.
Referring by lletter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the carpet-stretcher, which comprises the roller d and a fulcrumed bar b, a frame c, a pawl d, and a hand-lever e. The roller d is provided with spurs f and at each end with journals g, which have their bearing in the eyes h on the inner end of the frame c, while the outer end of said frame has an eye t', through which passes the lower end of the bar b. This bar b is'provided at its lower end with a spurj, while the upper end serves as a handle for a purpose presently explained. Upon thelower portion of this bar b and arranged above the eye z' of the frame is secured a collar 7c, to which the end lof the pawl eZ is pivoted, while the opposite end of said pawl engages the ratchet-teeth m,that are centrally arranged upon the toothed roller. This roller in addition to the ratchetteeth has openings n, which are in line with said teeth and alternate therewith, said openings being designed to receive one end of a detachable hand-lever e, whereby the roller is revolved.
to the opposite side thereof and in front of the teethupon the roller, the same serving -to keep the carpet from the spurs andpreventing it from following the roller. Aguide loop or staple p is securedto the top of the frame, through which the pawl freely passes, and held in position to properly engage the teeth on face of the toothed roller.
Having thus described the various parts of which my invention is composed, I will now proceed and explain its operation.
In operating my device the roller is placed near the washboard of the house, and the teeth of said roller grasp the carpet, after which the spur j in the lower end of the bar b is forced into the-floor, and while the operator holds the handle-barb withone of his hands he inserts the end of thelever in one of the openingen and forces the lever forward, thus revolving the roller, which by its teeth draws the carpetand stretches it to be tacked to the floor, and at the same time the pawl engages one of the ratchet-teeth and prevents the roller turning backward and releasing its grip upon the carpet. It will thus be seen that in using my 'device one person can readily and easily operate it, and it is simple in construction, quickly operated, and at the same time inexpensive to manufacture.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The within-described carpet-stretcher,com prising the toothed roller a provided with the ratchet-teeth m and openings fn, arranged midway between the opposite ends thereof, a frame c to which the roller is pivoted, a crossbar o having a guide p, secured to thel frame, a pawl d and hand-lever b and e, said pawl being pivoted at one end to the lever b and its free end passing through the guide p engaging the teeth m, the whole constructed and arranged as shown and described.
In testimony whereof Iafx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB VB. RUSSEL.
