UNITED STATES JAMES A. RISDON, 0F IITHAGA, NEW YORK, ASSIenoE on ONE-HALF TO SIDNEY A. RISDON, OF WALTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
PATENT OFFICE.
CARPET-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 266,893, dated October 31, 1882.
Application filed August 18, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. RISDoN, of Ithaca, in the county of Tompkins and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet Stretchers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form, a part, of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, of my improved carpet-stretcher, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates to carpet-scretchers; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents a suitable handle provided at its lower end with a transverse cross-piece or head, B, having'sharp-pointed teeth 0, which may be slightly curved, so as to take readily in the carpet without entering the floor. The handle or lever A is pivoted between the prongs D of a forked bar, E, the lower end of which is set in a metallic socket or ferrule, F, terminating in a single long sharp point, G.
(No model.)
Pivoted to the bar E is a segmental ratchetbar, H, which extends through and engages a beveled slot, I, in the lever A.
The operation of my invention will be understood from the drawings. The long point G, which should be thin, strong, and smooth, enters the'floor through the carpet, passing between the meshes ofthe latter without breaking the threads or injuring the carpet. The barbed head of lever A is utilized to push or stretch the carpet in the direction desired, and the device may be locked, so as to hold the carpet securely while being stretched by the ratchet-bar I.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The herein described improved carpetstretcher, consisting of the forked bar E, having socket or ferrule F, provided with the long and thin smooth and sharp point G and the pivoted ratchet-bar H, in combination with'the lever A, having beveled slot I and head B, provided with teeth or points 0, as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own 1 have hereto affixed' my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES A. RISDON. Witnesses:
