Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 30, 1909.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JULIUs G. (Season, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in shoe stretchers and has for its object the production of a device of this character which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, comparatively inexpensive of manufacture, and by means of which shoes may be stretched at local points to compensate for abnormal skin excrescences, such as corns and bunions, and thereby render comfortable a shoe which in all other respects is a perfect fit.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

IVith these objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,

Referring now to the drawings, 1 designates a lever and 2 a second lever pivoted to lever 1 as shown. The lever 1 is provided at one extremity with a hemispherical stretcher-head 3 and at the other with a curved toothed rack 4. the former being provided to stretch the leather of the shoe at any desired point and the latter being adapted to engage the link 5 for locking the levers together during the time that the shoe is being stretched. A long nearly straight edge 6 is provided at one extremity of the lever 2 so that a long contact is made on the side of the shoe opposite to that being stretched, and at the other end of said lever an eye 7 is provided in which the link 5 is pivoted, the latter being free to swing as indicated by dotted lines. 5 is provided with an edge 8 V-shaped in cross section to engage the raking teeth 9 of the rack at and with a spherical handle 10 by means of which the link 5 may be forced over said teeth for drawing the levers together. The teeth 9 thus serve two functions, namely, the cooperation of the inclined surfaces thereof with the edge 8 of the link in forcing the levers together and the cooperation of the short surfaces or stops thereof with said edge for locking the link in position when the proper tension has been secured. A tool is thus formed which is comparatively quick-acting and very eflicient in use.

While I have shown what I deem to be the preferred form of my invention I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be various changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I' desire to avail myself of such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a shoe stretcher, the combination of two levers pivoted together intermediate their ends, a hemispherical stretcher-head at one extremity of one lever and a curved toothed rack at the other, and a link pivoted in an eye provided in the other lever adapted to engage said toothed rack and draw the ends of said levers together. substantially as described.

2. In a shoe stretcher, the combination of two levers pivoted together intermediate their ends, a hemispherical stretcher-head at one extremity of one lever and a curved toothed rack at the other, a link pivoted in an eye provided in the other lever adapted to engage said toothed rack and draw the ends of said levers together, and a handle extension on said link, substantially as described.

3.
