SEVING-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 2, 1909.
Patented July 20, 1909.
Serial No. 80,929.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLES'E. Burrs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Redondo, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing- Tools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to devices for stretching the cloth where a button-hole is being sewed to facilitate the sewing of the button-hole without distorting it out of shape, and has for its object to provide such a device which will be cheap to make and easy to operate.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan and Fig. 2 a side elevation thereof, and Fig. 8 is a plan showing it in use.
Similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
This device consists of a piece of resilient substance, such as spring brass or steel wire, bent and shaped in the following manner Both the ends 1 are straight and are pointed, lying in the same plane but normally diverging toward their ends. The parts 2, adjacent the ends 1, rise out of the plane of the ends 1 and approach each other and then twist one-half way around each other, and the middle portion 3 forms a loop from the said twisted part, on a plane substantially parallel with but above that of the ends 1. 3 forms the handle of the device.
The device is used by drawing the points 1 toward each other, by compressing the sides of the loop 3 or the ends 1, and inserting them into the cloth near each end of the button-hole slit, and then the action of the spring material tends to separate the points 1 and draws the cloth taut thus keeping the slit in shape while it is being worked.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
A device of the class described comprising a bent form of resilient material, having its central portion forming a handle, its ends forming applying points adapted to be inserted into the cloth to stretch it therebetween, and its intermediate parts twisted one-half way around each other, substantially as and for the purpose described.
in testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES E. BETTS. Witnesses B. V. Pruner, M. F. MoNIEL.
