EMMA L. JONES, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOILET ARTICLE.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EMMA L. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet Articles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in toilet articles, and particularly to one devised for straightening hair.
The invention has for its object to construct a toilet article which will efectually press the hair to straighten the same.
A further object of the invention is to construct a device of this character, which is exceedingly simple in construction, durable and one which may be manufactured at a minimum cost.
With these and other objects in View, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a top plan view of the device. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 3 is a sectional View on line 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4: is a similar view showing the hair engaged.
The device consists of a pair of handles l, said handles being provided with grips 2. Said handles being pivotally connected at their points of crossing, and terminate at one of their ends in bars 3 and t, the bar 3 being provided with comb teeth 5. The bar 3 is of greater thickness than the comb teeth 5, thus producing a shoulder 6, the purpose of which will appear later. The bar 4 is provided upon its outer edge with a Hange 7 at right angles thereto, the same being thus arranged at right angles to the plane of the comb teeth 5, so that when the han- Speccation of Letters Patent.
Application led August 13, 1912.

dles are forced toward each other the points of the comb teeth lwill bear against the flange, and the shoulder 6 will engage the inner edge of the bar 4t, and the comb teeth rest upon one face thereof.
In use the handles l are spread apart, thus spreading the bars 3 and 4: apart, whereupon the comb teeth are passed through the hair and the handles are then forced toward each other until the inner ends of the comb teeth S and flange 7 and shoulder 6 engage the inner edge of the bar L1. After the hair is thus engaged it is only necessary to move the device in such a direction that the hair will pass between the bars, thus straightening the same, as it will pass during this operation, around the inner edge of the bar a. It will be further noted that by providing the flange 7, the engaged hair will not be permitted to pass longitudinally of the bar 3, but will be compelled to engage the shoulder 6 and inner edge of the bar 4.
1What is claimed is lA toilet article of the class described comprising a pair of crossed handles pivotally connected at their point of crossing, said handles terminating in bars, one of said bars being provided wit-h comb teeth, said bar being greater in width than the comb teeth thereby providing a shoulder, the other bar provided at its outer edge with a flange to be engaged by the points of the comb teeth when the handles are forced toward each other and when the inner edge of the second bar engages the shoulder of the opposing bar, said comb teeth being then adapted to rest against the adjacent surface of the second bar, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I aiiX my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
EMMA L. JONES.
