Description

C. H. LOVRIEN. Pipe Tongs.
No. 234,304. Patented Nov. 9, |880.
WITNESSES: INVBNTOR 2 1, jf ff/JVM TTORNEYS.
A :SALLE t A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. LOVRIEN, 0F ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO MARY A.
' LOVRIEN, OF SAME PLAGE.
PI PE-TONGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,304, dated November 9, 1880. Application filed August 15, 1879.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES H. LovRIEN,
ot' Erie, in the county of Erie and State ot' Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe-Tongs, ot' which the following is a specification.
rIhe nature of my invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement oi' a pipetongs having a hook and an opposite recess, a cubical bit seated in said recess, an adjustingscreW, and a bar extending across said recess and confining the bit, all as hereinafter set forth, and shown in the accompanying drawings, to which reference is made.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side View of my improved pipe-tongs, partially in section. Fig. 2 is an edge View ot' the same. and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cubical bit.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A Al are the levers or legs of the tongs, halved into each other and pivoted together in the usual Way. The leg A terminates in a hook, a, into Which the pipe is introduced, and the leg A has a rectangular recess, b, formed in it, in which is placed a cubical steel bit, B. This bit is adjustable in or out by means of a set-screw, C, extending through a screw-threaded perforation in the back Wall of the recess, as shown in Fig. 1.
The bit B is maintained in position by means of a crossbar, c, extending across the mouth of the recess. This bar is readily drawn ont of its seat-holes z' in the cheeks of the recess and the bit removed. The bit projects out of the recess a sufficient distance, and its edge, by biting on the pipe, holds it stationary. The bit, being a cube, has twelve edges, any one of which may be used with good results, so that as one becomes blunted by long use another may be placed in position by removing the cross-bar c and turning the bit. By these means the bit is rendered always effective, and when, from long use, the edges are all blunted another may be substituted therefor at a merely nominal cost.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with a tongs having a hook, a, and an opposite recess, b, of a cubical bit, B, seated in said recess, an adjustingscrew, and a cross-bar, c, extending across said recess and con iinin g the bit, substantially as specified.
CHARLES H. LOVRIEN.
