Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 18, 19.10.
Application filed .Tune 15, 1910. Serial No. 567,017.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT P. SCHULTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kenosha, in the county of Kenosha and State of WVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pliers, of which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion relates to improvements in combined pliers, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction, comprising few parts, which is du' rable, which has great strength, and which will eifectively and securely grip an article to which it is applied.
WVith the above, and other objects in view, which will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the improvement, and in which drawings, the figure illustrates a side elevation partly in section of the improvement.
The numeral 1 designates the improved pliers. These pliers 1 comprise essentially a pair of handle members designated by the numerals 2 and 3. The handle member 2 has its outer extremity provided with an arcuate jaw 4. The inner face of this curved jaw .4 is provided with a plurality of teeth and the extremity of the said jaw is substantially flattened and indented as indicated by the numeral 6. The second handle member 3 has its outer extremity bifurcated to provide a pair of arms which are adapted to overlie the jaw portion 4 of the arm 2. The numeral 7 designates a pintle whereby the said arms 2 and 3 are pivotally secured together. The bifurcated portion of the arm 3 extends a suitable distance beyond the toothed portion of the jaw 2, and pivotally secured to this extending portion is an independently movable jaw 8. The jaw 8 has its inner face provided with a plurality of teeth 9 and its extremity provided with a flattened indented or serrated portion 10. The jaw 8 adjacent its pivotal connection with the handle 2 is provided with a curved face having teeth 11, and the said teeth are adapted to engage wit-h the teeth provided upon the lower portion of the jaw 4 at its juncture with the arm 2. The jaw 3 is provided with a flattened spring 12, the same being adapted to contact with the arm 2 so as to normally spread both of the arms 2 and 3 away from each other and to open the jaws 4 and 8. By this arrangement, it will be noted that both the jaws 4 and 8 are spread asuflicient distance apart to allow the teeth 5 and 9 to contact with a nut or similar device, and when it is desired to employ the device for pliers, the flattened surfaces 6 and 10 may be readily drawn to gether so that a wire or brad may be quickly grasped and extracted.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that I have provided an extremely simple and thoroughly effective device for the purpose intended, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the improvement, as itnow appears to me, minor details of construction, within the scope of the following claim may be resorted to if desired.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new is A pliers comprising a pair of pivoted arms, one of said arms having a curved aw portion provided with teeth and the extremity of the jaw being flattened and serrated, the offset arm having an extension, a pivoted jaw connected with the extension, said aw having its inner face provided with teeth and its outer extremity provided with a flattened serrated portion, the teeth adj acent the connection of the second jaw with the arm adapted to engage with the teeth provided by the jaw of the first arm, and a spring member carried by one of the arms and adapted to engage with the opposite arm to normally spread the jaws away from each other.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT P. SCHULTZ.
