APPLICATION FILED Nov. 29. 1915.

JOE IB. SAMUELS, OF COALG'AT'E, OKLAHOMA.
ICE-TONGS.
Application filed November 29, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jon B. SAMnnLs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coalgate, in the county of Coal and State 7 of Qklahoma, have invented a new and useful Ice-Tongs, of which the followlng 1s a specification.
This invention relates to ice tongs and more particularly to a device of this character utilizing a single handle or grip but having means combined therewith whereby the.
prongs of the device can be held apart while the tongs are being placed in position upon a cake of ice.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention. 7 In the accompanying drawings the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :Figure 1 is a front elevation of the tongs in use, the same being shown extended so as to be readily placed in engagement with a cake of ice. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the tongs in engagement with a cake of ice.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a loop-shaped grip formed at the upper end of a hanger 2 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 23, 1916.
Serial No. 64,120. 1
links 4 are finger pieces 8 preferably so shaped as to be engaged comfortably by a finger of the hand holding the grip 1.
It is to be understood that under normal conditions the pivot 6 is located at the lower end of the slot 3 at which time the finger pleces 8 are located below but adjacent the ends of the grip 1. When it is desired to use the tongs, one of the fingers of the hand holding the grip 1 is extended so as to engage the adjacent finger piece 8 and said finger piece is then pulled upwardly with the result that the pivot stud 6 will be drawn upwardly within slot 3 and the two arms 5 raised so as to move prongs 7 away from each other. Consequently while the tongs are thus held, as shown in Fig. 1, they can be placed astride the cake of ice A to be engaged, after which the finger piece is released and the prongs 7 will gravitate into engagement with the cake. By then pulling upwardly on the grip l the tongs will bite into the cake and raise it therewith.
By providing two finger pieces 8, one of them will always be in position for'engagement by a finger of the hand engaging grip 1.
What is claimed is Ice tongs including a grip, a hanger depending therefrom, oppositely extending links pivotally connected to the hanger, finger Pieces extending from the outer ends of the links to positions within reach of the hand holding the grip, crossed arms pivotally connected at one end to the respective links, a pivot stud extending through the arms at their point of crossing and slidably engaging the hanger, said arms having terminal prongs.-
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
