1 Claim. 1
My invention relates to cordwood pulp tongs, an object of the invention being to provide a device of the character herewithin described by means of which the lifting and transportation of logs may be greatly facilitated.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which is particularly designed for the more eiiicient piling and loading of pulp and ties, and which includes convenient means, whereby upon the application of a squeezing pressure upon the handle, the tongs will open ready for application to a log, tie or the like.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which is of eminently simplified construction, and which may therefore be manufactured and sold for a reasonable and modest price, which will give long service and which will not become out of order.
With the foregoing objects in view, and such other objects and advantages as will become apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention relates as this specification proceeds, my invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts all as hereinafter more particularly described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my cordwood pulp tongs shown open.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of my cordwood pulp tongs in situ upon a log.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
The work of lifting and transporting logs during various lumbering operations can be very greatly facilitated, and industrial accidents and physical strains reduced by the use of a device such as I will now describe.
This invention comprises of a pair of tongs per se enumerated I, each comprising a log encircling jaw portion 2 and lever arms 3 and 4, the lever arms being mutually divergent, and each integral and cotermlnous with the jaw portion from which it extends. The parts which I have designated 2 and 3, and 2 and 4, are distinguished, and to be considered as separated by the stud 5 upon which the tongs are mutually pivoted.
Freely secured to the outer ends of the lever arms 3 and 4 via the studs 6, are angulated links 1 and 8, these links each being freely secured by means of the studs 9 where indicated to a handle ll) of the configuration clearly illustrated, and which, as illustrated, consists of a piece of fiat metal longitudinally rolled or folded upon the underside to provide a conveniently rounded bearing area H, and an opening l2 upon the upper side l3, which opening, I have referred to in the accompanying claim as a longitudinal slot.
A portion of the handle is also nibbled out at the loci M to receive the links I and 8, and from this context and reference to the accompanying Figures 2 and 3 particularly, it will be clear that the angulated portions 15 of my links 1 and 8 are intended to occupy the aforesaid longitudinal slots, and overlap therewithin.
By this arrangement it will be apparent that when the user of my tongs is carrying them by his side for instance with the jaws 2 hanging empty, the angulated portions I5 will be projecting upwardly at the free ends thereof somewhat more than as illustrated in Figure 2, so that should he desire quickly to spread the jaw portions and grab a log, all that is necessary is to apply a squeezing pressure against the overlapping free ends l5, whereupon the jaw portions will immediately separate as illustrated in Figure 1 in readiness for application to a log or the like.
To eliminate the possibility of the jaw portions accidentally rotating in the opening direction to such an extent that they will ride past the studs 6, and pinch the hand grasping the lifting handle I0, I have provided the projecting stop I6 which need be secured upon only one of the lever arms 3 or 4, and which, it will clearly be understood projects far enough to prevent any possible pinching action such as I have described.
Since various modifications can be made in my invention as hereinabove described and many apparently widely different embodiments of same made within the scope of the claim without departing from such spirit and scope, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense and I desire only such limitations placed thereon as are specifically expressed in the accompanying claim.
What I claim as my invention is:
A lumber tongs comprising in combination a pair of mutually pivoted and intersecting log encircling tongs, said tongs each comprising a log encircling jaw on one side of the point of mutual pivoted attachment, and a lever arm upon the other, integral and coterminous with said law, said lever arms being mutually divergent, a pair 3 of links each freely secured at one end thereof to the free end of one of said lever arms. a lifting g The following references are of record in the 16 file of this patent:
