Description

No. 201,291. Patented March 12, I878.
ATTORNEYS NJ'ETERS. PHOT UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE-- JAMES SGARRITT, JR., OF PBOPHETSTOWN, ILL., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HISRIGHT TO HARVEY C. HULL AND CHAS. W. HULL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENINGS FOR CHAIR-LEGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,291, dated March 12, 1878; application filed January 16, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES SCARRITT, Jr., of Prophetstown,in the county of Whitesides, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening for the Legs and Backs of Chairs; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a mode of securing the arms or legs of chairs or other furniture to their frames or bodies, the peculiarities of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the annexed figures, A represents a chairleg, which has a round tenon, B, turned upon its upper end, as usual. This tenon B is provided with a slot, in which is inserted a metal plate, which is serrated or toothed upon its two edges, as seen, the teeth inclining downward,
and projecting out a little beyond the circumference of the leg A. This plate fits snugly in the slot in the tenon, and is there firmly held in place by means of a pin, a, which passes through both the wood and metal. When this tenon is driven into the hole in the body made to receive it, the teeth catch into the wood in the sides of the hole and secure it firmly in place. A leg fastened in this manner cannot be removed except great force be applied to it.
What I claim, and desire secure by Letters Patent, is-
The leg A, provided with the slotted tenon B, and having inserted and secured therein the serrated plate (3, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoiugI have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of December, 1877.
JAMES SCARRITT, JR.
Witnesses:
W. D. SMITH, JAMES SCARRITT.
