Description

A. W. D-OWDELL. VEGETABLE-GRATERS.
No. 195.352. Patented Sept.18,1877.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
ABNER W. DOWDELL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN VEGETABLE-GRATERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 195,352, dated September 18, 1877; application filed August 21, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ABNER W. DOWDELL, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vegetable-Graters andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains tomake and use it, reference being had to the accom panying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View, and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section.
My invention has for its object to provide a cheap, simple, durable, and effective vegetable-grater made, essentially, of two parts.
My invention consists, essentially, of avegetable-grater formed of two parts, namely, a bent wood frame in a single piece, and a single sheet of punched metal, said frame and sheet being united by nailing or equivalent means, the edges of the sheet being bent, lapped, or turned over to form lateral stays for the frame, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A A are the sides, formed of a single piece of wood, A, bent so as to make a bow at B, which serves as a handle for grasping when the device is required for use.
G is a sheet or plate of metal, punched up in the usual manner from the back side to form a grating-surface. Two of the edges of this sheet are inserted in kerfs a a, formed by a saw or by any suitable tool in the sides A A. The other two edges of said sheet are bent, turned over, or lapped, as shown at c c, to thicken them, thereby forming lateral braces for the sides A A, and thus dispensing with the wooden rounds or cross-bars heretofore required for that purpose.
By the use of the kerfs a a the raw edges of the sheet are kept covered, and a more finished appearance thereby given to the article.
01 d are nails by which the sheet and frame are secured together.
What I claim as my invention is- The vegetable-grater consisting of the sides A A, with kerfs a and handle B,in onepiece, in combination with the grating-plate 0, consisting of a single piece of metal with the top and bottom edges lapped, as at 0, and side edges secured by nailing to the side pieces A A, all as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of August, 1876.
ABNER W. DOWDELL.
