IMPROVEMENT IN WALL-FENDERS FOR FURNITURE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. TIZZARD, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wall-Fenders for Furniture; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

The object of this invention is the production of an improved wall-fender for furniture which shall combine lightness with strength and efficiency.

The novelty consists in the construction of the device and its adaptation, as will be here-- with set forth and specifically claimed.

To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents, in perspective, my improved wall-fender, made adjustable; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of my device.

It is well known to housekeepers how furniture not carefully handled will injure walls by abrading the paper or plastering, and what trouble and expense are consequent thereon.

My purpose is to prevent such injury by applying my improved fender to the rear feet of the articles of furniture, and having it abut against the chair-board, to keep the furniture from touching the walls.

I am aware that this has been done by various devices dissimilar to mine, which latter I construct as follows A, Fig. 2, is a piece of wood of from onehalf inch to one inch in thickness, and having its front edge out out to form the barbs or hooks b, of the shape represented. Into the recesses c of thesehooks the hind feet or casters of a chair, table, lounge, or other article of furniture lit.

The width of the piece is sufficient to preventthe back of the article of furniture from touching the wall, while its rear edge abuts against the chair-board, and may be provided with rubber or other pads.

One or more screws may be used to fasten the fender to the floor, and by the construction of the hooks b the piece of furniture is likewise held from displacement.

In order to obviate the necessity of making fenders of various lengths to fit different articles of furniture, the piece A may be made in two parts, d and c, Fig. 1, which overlap and are free to slide upon each other, so as to be elongated or shortened. These pieces are held in a straight line by a sheet-metal band, f, enveloping both, and fastened to one of them.

In addition to this band, in order to prevent lateral displacement, I employ a set-screw, h, which passes through a slot, t", in the piece 11, into the piece 6. By means of this screw the .parts, after having been adjusted to the hind feet of -the furniture, may be clamped together.

Instead of the band f the piece dmight have upon its under side a longitudinal dovetailed tongue to fit into a corresponding mortise in the piece 0.

The device, when completed, may be engraved or ornamented in any desired manner.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim- 1. A wall-fenderconsistingof abody,A,having integral hooks or barbs b, for embracing the hind feet of any article of furniture, and preventing the same from defacing the wall, as set forth.

2. In a wall-fender for furniturehaving hooks or barbs b, the body A, made in two parts, adapted to slide on each other, and be held by a set-screw, whereby the fender may be lengthened or shortened to suit any piece of furniture, as and in the manner specified.
