Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,634, dated December 25, 1877 application filed November 20, 1877.

To all whom it may cohcern:

Be it known that we, WILLIAIVI W. LILEs,

-of Roanoke, Randolphcounty, Alabama,and

LA FAYETTE W. LILEs, of Jackson, Hinds county, Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Book-Bests, of which .the following is a clear, full, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in whichi Figure 1 is a perspective view of our im-- proved book-rest. Fig. 2 is adetail, showing the back of the book-rest.

Our invention relates to improvements in book-rests adapted to be applied to chairs,

&c.-; and the invention consists in'the general construction and arrangement of parts, whereby the book-rest is adapted to various adjust- -lnents, all as hereinafter fully described.

.To enable others skilled in the art to makeand use our invention, we will proceed to describe the exact manner in which we have carried it out.

In the drawings, A represents the book-rest, constructed in the usual manner, and which is provided with an elastic cord, a, for holding the leaves of the book in position. B is a right-angled bar secured to the rear side of thebook-rest, as clearly shown inFig. 2. One

end of the bar B'extends beyond the bookrest, and to which is pivoted one end of a wright-angled bar, G, the other end of the said bar being pivoted-to the standard D. Said bar 0 isprovided at one end with asemicircular slot, 0, and at its opposite end with a quadrangular or-circular slot, 0'. Bymeans of the slot 0 and the set-screw d, the bookrest can be adjusted horizontally to any posi- The bar F is pivoted to the leg G of a chair, or to any other desired article of furniture,

and is provided with a quadrangular or circu lar slot, f, and set-screw f, by means of which the book-rest can be adjusted toward or from the chair, as may be desired.

By the above-described construction it will be observedthat the book-rest is adapted to various adjustments to suit the convenience of the reader.

We are aware that adjustable book-rests are old, and such we'do notclaini, broadly, as our invention; but

What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with the book-rest, of the B, m'ght-angledbar O, havright-angled bar ing slots and set-screws c c d d, standard D, and bar F, provided with the sleeve E, slots f, and set-screws e f, the several parts constructedand relatively arranged to operate substantially as herein shown and described.
