ADJUSTABLE SHELF-BRACKET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,004, dated May 28, 1889. Application filed February 16, 1889. Serial No. 300,143. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ANsEL N. HovEY, of Jackson, in the county of J aokson and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Shelf-Brackets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in adjustable shelf-brackets; and the objects of my improvements are to secure cheapness of construction, to do away with the necessity of using cores in casting the parts, and to secure a serviceable bracket which shallnot be liable to accidental displacement. I attain these objects by the apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an isometric view of the supporting-arm and a portion of the standard. A part of the standard is broken'away to show the way in which the supporting-arm is secured thereto. Fig. 2 is asection of the standard, taken in the planeindicated by the lines 00 a as, Fig. 1.

A A is a standard. 1) is the base of said standard, and is extended forward to form a foot, 0, which is perforated to allow the passage of a screw-shank to secure the lower end of the standard to the floor.

a a are side pieces, which are parallel to each other and are cast in one piece with the .base I) and cross-pieces (Z to form the standard A. The cross-pieces (Z are set back a short distance from the front of the standard A, so that the side pieces, a (Z, shall form shoulders e e, to prevent the accidental lateral displacement of the lower portion of the shelf-supporting arm B.

The shelf-supporting arm B is provided with a hook, f, adapted to pass between the cross pieces (Z and rest upon and back of one of said cross-pieces to secure the shelf-supporting arm 13 to the standard A.

g is a web forming a brace to the shelf-supporting arm B.

h is a foot upon the lower rear portion of the brace g. The foot h is formed at such a distance below the hook f that said foot shall rest against one of the cross-pieces d. The foot h is in width a little less than the distance between the inside faces of the side pieces, a a.

The weight of the shelf will hold the hook f in place and will hold the foot h against the cross-piece (Z and between the side pieces, a a.

The standard A and shelf-supporting arm B, as above described, may be cast without cores, and are usually ready to be put up as soon as taken from the sand; but if any roughness of the surfaces should occur all the important surfaces are level and accessible to the grindstone and can be readily smoothed.

In the above-described apparatus the arm B is held firmly in place and is secure from accidental displacement.

The combination of the standard A A, composed of the side pieces, a a, and cross-pieces (Z, said cross-pieces being set somewhat back from the front of said standard to form the shoulders e e, and the shelf-supporting arm B B, provided with the hook f, and a brace adapted to pass between the side pieces, a a, and rest against the cross-pieces (Z, substantially as shown and described.
