UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER MOGREGOR, OF-OHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BOlLER-BRACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,388, dated January 8, 1 895.
Application filed December 7, 1893. Renewed December 14, 1894. Serial No. 531,864. (No model.)
.inside a steam boiler to brace the heads or other flat surfaces of the boiler The object of my invention is to produce a very cheap and simple brace which may be easily applied to a boiler, and which, while made of light, flat metal, is shaped in such a way as to make it very strong, to the end that it may efficiently brace the boiler.
To these-ends my invention consists of a boiler brace, the construction of which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the boiler brace embodying my invention. cross section of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a broken longitudinal section of a boiler and shows the application of my'improvedbrace thereto. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of the brace; and Fig. 5 is a cross section on the line 55 of Fig. 4. a
The brace is made of flat metal, of the necessary thickness, and the body of the brace is split at one end to form a crow foot 11, the prongs 12 of which, as illustrated in Fig. 1, are made convex and twisted to form flat ends 13, which are adapted to be riveted to the-head Fig. 2 is a' of a boiler, as shown in Fig. 3. The single end of the body ofthe brace is also flat,-as shown at 14, to enable it to be conveniently riveted to the shell of the boiler. v
It will be seen that by making the prongs of the brace convex, as illustrated best in Fig. 2, the strength of the prongs is very much increased, and by twisting the feet 13, as specified, the flat surfaces are made at'right an gles to the end 14 of the brace and consequently, when the brace is fastened in place, it is exceptionally strong. Instead of making the prongs of the crow foot convex, as described, they may be made concave on the outer sides, as shown in Fig. 4, and the same stiifening effect is produced as if they were shaped as illustrated in Fig. 1.
When either form of brace is applied to the boiler, the end 14 is riveted to the shell 15 of the boiler, as shown in Fig. 3, while the feet 13 are riveted to the head 16, and in this way the head isthoroughly braced.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, a boiler PETER MOGREGOR.
